Yesterday I took a two and a half hour walk on the beach, and today I did my two hour walk/run. I try to go out two to three times a week.

I got so fat last year, IMO, that I quit drinking and made a determined effort to lose. Happy to say, after a year of diet and exercise, I am now back into my skinny clothes. The main way to succeed, again IMO, is to not expect results overnight. It took me a year to really change my slacking exercise habits and diet by being determined and committed. Plus, looking into the mirror when I was naked helped give me motivation! No fancy diet or scam can do it. One has to have personal desire to make a change and stick with it.

Glad I’m not into dieting – of the above, the chicken is the only thing I consider edible, grapefruit on rare occasions.

I have a big weakness when it comes to sweets, so when I found myself at an unacceptable weight at age 40, I turned to exercise as my primary focus.

I started by exercising thirty minutes a day. I alternated bike riding with a weight-lifting program. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I did a series of weight and exercise sets on a pretty basic weight bench. Leg lifts, bench presses, leg extensions, butterfly curls, leg lifts, arm curls and military presses. All of these could be done with a basic bench and a free weight set of 120 lbs.

On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I would ride my bike, and if it was cold, I rode an indoor bike for thirty to forty minutes.

And on Sunday, I rested.

In about three or four months, I went from 225 down to 190, (I'm 5'8"). In the summertime, I started running instead of biking and dropped down to about 180.

That was four years ago, and I've gone on and off the exercise plan several times for various reasons. The hardest thing was finding the time. I tried doing it in the evening, after work, but there were always too many things to interfere, so I started getting up earlier in the morning, and do all my exercise before eating anything.

Now, I weigh 185 and I'm starting up again after slacking off during the winter. It's hard to get back going, but it's amazing how much better I feel after only two weeks of following the plan.

The only real diet element was that I began eating more fruit and almost eliminated soda. Other than that, I still eat the same as I did before.

Aaargh!

I was down 52 lbs and I went to DC for two and a half weeks. I tried to eat right but I didn't get on the treadmill every day. I just got back yesterday and I found that I'd gained 3 lbs. I think it was the pizza that the D.C. Chapter FReepers made me eat. Yeah, that's it.

But, my last 2 week trip to a more humid area (I live in Arizona in the high desert) I gained some weight too and I immediately lost it - dramatically lost it - as in 3 lbs in one day - the day after I got back. I was in a far more humid area again so I'm hoping that I experience the same thing this time. Plus, I did a much harder workout on the treadmill this morning to get that weight back off and get back on my weight loss curve. I'll be doing that until I'm back on track. Lesson learned is that I have to be more diligent about working out even when I'm on travel. I mean, I make sure the hotel has a treadmill in the exercise room, but then I don't use it as often as I should. Now I've seen the results of that and I can't let myself repeat that behavior.

The success I did have was that right after I first got there, I found that I had lost another inch and had to drill the 4th hole in my belt since October. It is kind of a trophy belt now, showing the loss of inches at my waist.

My wife is now well over her 30 lbs weight loss goal and is still losing weight and inches. She got to go shopping for new skinnier clothes and found that she'd gone down 4 dress sizes.

Bottom line is that eating right and getting a little exercise really does work if you stick to it.

I tried every diet in sight. After I retired from the Army, I quit running 5 miles a day because of bum knees. I sat on my lazy butt and gained 80 pounds. Going from 195 to 275 in a few short years. Finally, tired of being fat, overweight, high blood pressure and drugs to control it, poor sleeping, pain and all associated with being overweight, my wife who was up to 168 on her 5-1 frame, decided to get off our lazy butts and do something.

We decided to try low fat. Everything I read said most average Americans eat 65-100 plus grams of fat per day. One Whopper meal with frys gets you about 85-90 of those grams. From my readings on the Internet, it said that you should eat no more than 30 grams of fat a day if you are active. We decided to cut it to 15 and go from there. I also read that you need 6-8 grams of fat per day just to keep your body "greased" up to do its work.

So, off we went on a low fat diet. Did not count calories as low fat means low calories. We just ate in moderation. The first month we did nothing physical. After a month, I had lost 30 pounds with no extra exercise!! My wife lost 15 pounds. Then we started walking a mile, adding on a little more each day, building up. Soon we were walking several miles. Then I got back into running, but my knees started killing me again.

So, we searched for a new "sport" to do. We got back into cycling. We bought new bikes got out on the road and starting riding. The first year I rode 3,500 miles. The second year 8,000 and last year 9,000 miles. We ride on trainers indoors during bad weather and short days of daylight in the winter. Yesterday I rode 65 miles!!! in just over 4 hours with bunches of hills, some over 1 mile in length at over 6 to 8% grade.

We continue the low fat diet along with our physical exercise. This morning, I weighted 156 pounds. My wife weighted 104. I have lost over 120 pounds and my wife 64 pounds. At age 55, I am healthier than I was in my 30s and 40s. LOW FAT works when combined with proper exercise and watching your diet. We don't eat pizza, frys, hamburgers, greasy foods anymore. We actually eat good foods, greens, fruits, etc.

One of the hardest things about working out is staying consistent. I found a workout that takes 20 min and you do it for 30 days. It really gets you into shape and keeps from getting monotonous. It also helps build your will because it only takes 20 min to complete. The problem with it is that you have to be in some kind of shape to do it in 20 min otherwise it may take alot longer.

I started doing it because I hate cardio and my shoulders were hurting from lifting weights.

Today is day 32 for me and my workout is

3 pull ups

6 push ups

9 squats

I do this continually for 15 minutes. It sounds easy but by your 10th rep you're sweating like a pig and you're muscles are burning.

WOW! FReepers losing weight!!! Please add me to your ping list. I have been minimizing my FReeping for quite awhile and part of the reason was because my weight was creeping up (and up) and I needed to get away from this blasted computer and MOVE. In January I decided to truly get serious about getting healthier, so I have been using my treadmill more and computer less. Also eating smaller meals more frequently is helping. Last week, my first 10 pounds were officially evicted and I am NEVER letting them come back!

Having just gone through another episode of my blood sugar going sky high, I am now determined to watch everything I eat. I found the following recipe at AllRecipes in their low carb section...this was a very good chicken dish.

INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
3 tablespoons whole wheat flour (I used regular flour)
2 tablespoons minced shallots
1/2 cup white wine
1/2 cup chicken stock
8 fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 sprig fresh tarragon
3 1/2 tablespoons port wine
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

DIRECTIONS:
In a deep skillet, heat oil on high. Coat chicken with flour, add to skillet, reduce heat and cook on low for 10 minutes (or until cooked through). Remove chicken breasts to a platter and keep warm.

To the same skillet, add the shallots, saute for 1 minute, then add wine and heat until reduced by half. Add stock and heat for 5 minutes until sauce thickens.

Meanwhile, in a small pan, saute mushrooms in a little oil. Add tarragon to mushrooms, then add both to the chicken and wine sauce. Cook all for 7 minutes, stir in port and cook for 5 more minutes.

Arrange the chicken on a platter and spoon sauce over it. Garnish with parsley and extra thyme sprigs. Serve.

Day 33 - 8 pounds lost. I now weigh LESS than what my driver's license says.

I'm looking to start something with weights, to stop muscle loss and improve general strength and fitness. (And impress the ladies once the top layer of fat is removed). Any advice on a men's program for absolute beginners?

As always, please share your fitness, nutritional, or weight loss successes,

Friday morning, I stepped on the scale and saw 198 for the first time in quite a while.

Sadly, this past weekend was a scheduled getaway where I knew I'd be eating stuff that I hadn't been. Actually, I didn't too badly, but then when I got home there was a St. Joseph's Day pastry waiting for me . . .

Anyway, it'll be back under 200 by midweek, I'm sure. Next stop, 195. No, make it 190.
