Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

That is hilarious! My freshman year (before I was even political) I made a bleeding heart 'Critical thinking & writing' prof of mine get teary-eyed because of my views on poverty.

I wasn't deliberately trying to be a jerk, but she made us read and discuss this absolutely rediculous story about how a woman who partied, got pregnant, became poor...then on welfare, blah blah blah... and then tried to make us believe it is society's fault and that she just had 'a run of bad luck'. I simply stated how/why it was complete crap, its her own fault, and I didn't feel sorry for her as she was unwilling to change her life to get out of her situation.

When I suggested that she could put her child in temporary foster care until she found a steady job, I thought she was going to break down emotionally. To the prof's credit though, I did receive good marks in the class!

OK, then, let the interrogation begin.

Do you have any hobbies?

What kind of music do you like?

What kind of college degree do you have, if any (I assume you do, but you what they say about assuming)?

What kind of job are you looking for?

Where in the country would you prefer to live?

Funny thing, in HS one of our assignments was to memorize and recite the first 18 lines of "Canterbury" in modern English:

"When in April the sweet showers fall
That pierce March's drought to the root and all
And bathed every vein in liquor that has power
To generate therein and sire the flower;
When Zephyr also has with his sweet breath,
Filled again, in every holt and heath,
The tender shoots and leaves, and the young sun
His half-course in the sign of the Ram has run
And many little birds make melody
That sleep through all the night with open eye
(So Nature pricks them on to ramp and rage)
Then folk do long to go on pilgrimage
And palmers to go seeking out strange strands
To distant shrines well known in distant lands.
And specially from every shire's end
Of England they to Canterbury went,
The holy blessed martyr there to seek
Who helped them when they lay so ill and weak"

But then, we could memorize and recite the original in its Middle English translation for a boat-load of extra credit points (pronouncing the language right as well):

"Whan that aprill with his shoures soote
The droghte of march hath perced to the roote,
And bathed every veyne in swich licour
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Whan zephirus eek with his sweete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre if croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the ram his halve cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open ye
(so priketh hem nature in hir corages);
Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages,
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes,
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
And specially from every shires ende
Of engelond to caunterbury they wende
The hooly blisful martir for to seke
That hem hath holpen, whan that they were seeke."

Strangely, not a single person chose to go for the extra credit.

At Michigan Tech, where I received my BSc, we actually had a firing range in the union building! There were also 'gun lockers' in the dorms so that students could have their guns.

Well done!

One other thing I did:

Did your school ever have anyone handing out those "Socialist Worker's Party" newspapers?

One day I'm walking to class and some hippie hands me one of these. I grinned at him, in such a way that he appeared to think it was a grin of approval. Then, I pulled a lighter out of my pocket, lit it up and threw it on the concrete and watched it burn. The guy had a look on his face like I'd just killed his poodle.

I don't smoke, so I lucked out that I had a lighter that day (it was for a project in a class.)
