Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Nice!

I have a funny college story.

I took Political Science second sememster of my sophomore year. The professor and TA were both fairly conservative, surprisingly, but there were outspokenly leftist students in the class. We had a 8:50 lecture three days a week and a 7:35 discussion two days, or something like that (it's been a while!)

Anyway, one morning, I was still a bit, let's say, hung over, from the night before. When I'm drunk or hungover (which isn't THAT often, don't get me wrong) I have a tendency to blurt things out and swear a lot more than I usually do. So, I was not feeling well, and during the early discussion class, we had this one guy who was 50-ish and going back to school, he was a long time "union-thug" type Dem. Going on and on about "Newt this, G-D Republicans that...yadda yadda..." then he said "see, I'm a Democrat...and..." and then for about 4 seconds, he paused. Right during the pause, before I could even think about what I had just said, I blurted out "now that's a f---ing surprise!"

Even the TA was laughing! The entire class roared! The guy got pi$$ed and sat down. Didn't say a word the rest of the class!

We shall see what we shall see.

LOL! I'm 30. And I'm technically available, but I'm at a point in my life where I can't really look because I'm going to be finishing up my education and will have to move to wherever I can find a job. Plus, I'm not going to meet anyone online to do some long-distance type of relationship. That may be for some people, but not me.

Often thought those things when I heard people go off in college, but rarely had the guts to confront them publicly. I had one teacher who particularly hated me for my Conservative views. I was surrounded by Liberals in my classes. I studied Criminal Law and wanted to prosecute the knuckleheads, but the Criminal Justice system just got too frustrating for me, so I ended up going into Business Law instead and Accounting.

They were made in Canada, and bought out by Olin I believe. Many were single shot .22's, nothing too fancy.

Looks a lot like a Cooey?

I'm not sure what a Cooey is, but the picture I posted is of a "Crickett Model 253 Red, White, & Blue Laminate / Blue 22LR Youth Rifle" sold at Walmart.

My school had it's share of liberals, but for a state University it had more conservatives than I would have expected.

Crickett and Chipmunk rifles are exactly identical to each other. This is allowed if the patent one firm had has run out.

Does that mean that women should be Liberal? I resent that implication. . .

No, the original joke said that the liberal men "evolved" into women. That thought gave me the heebie-geebies because the thought of a woman having once been a man is creepy. Furthermore, I'd like to think that good women don't share many thought processes with liberal men.

Turns out he lived only an hour and a half away from me. He was deployed to Hungary when we met online in a conservative Yahoo chatroom.
