Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Glad to see you made it through last weekend.

Thank you. It apparently was a tough weekend for many. No problems here at all. From what I've read, 9 killed, 100 injured and 700 hundred houses destroyed in our state. Crane school district sent school buses with high school students to help clean up. I've been through one tornado taking the trailer I'd planned to live in a month's time (that was 25 years ago!). Good to see teenagers who were bussed to help, one said "yeah, I don't miss giving up school for a day but I'm learning here what I wouldn't have learned in school, helping others". Sweet!!

Yeah, she's my oldest, will be 19 in August. She loves to holler at night as she plays, like at 3 or 4 on the morning. B-) She's going for a checkup this weekend, the only issues she has is a hyperactive thyroid, common in older cats, but beyond that, she is helthy, and active like she was when we got her at 8 weeks of age. She loves to play fetch too.

As anyone can tell by my screenname, I am French on one side. The other side is about as English as possibly. There may be a tiny amount of Scottish in there, but it's uncertain. And just a teeny dash of Cherokee Indian.

I remember my grandmother on mom's side said we might have a dash of Irish in us somewhere, dunno where unless her father might have had some because her mother's side and some of her father's were mainly German. I remember her telling me that my great-great grandfather (her grandfather) was a Prussian Army Captain.

My father's side is kind of interesting too. From what my grandmother said, (she just turned 91) her grandfather took part in the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia (her maiden name was a corruption of the word "Bolshevik" in Russian, dunno what it was before) and according to family stories (I will need to verify this, so far this seems to be conjecture), he became a top general in one of the Soviets and worked with Lenin and Stalin directly. He did have the wisdom to tell his son, her father, to get out, "you don't want any part of this." It's kind of weird, if true, I'm the direct descendant of one of the founders of the USSR. B-P I wonder if he survived the purges if he lived that long to see them?

Her other on the other hand, was Jewish, she suffered greatly under the pogroms of the cossacks, had two villages burned out from under until her family sent her to America.

I've already told the story of one of her brothers who was a violinist who through a Jewish in that community married a young girl. B-)

I need to talk with her much, much more, she is one of the few links that I know if to pre-Revolutionary Russia.

A tornado siren will wake you up!! Just ask me. No tornados within 15 miles but I was awakened 3 times that night. You should be thankful if you were right next to one, it will wake up people from miles around....and it's possible they would need to wake up but please...let the rest of us sleep. :^)
