Best detterent of all, a bolt with a worn head!!
LOL! Yeah, I've made a few of those, in my shade-tree mechanic days. My "most favorite of all": old exhaust header flange bolts. Years of heating/cooling cycles generally weld those things in place and even liberal application of WD-40 or Liquid Wrench isn't enough to break them loose. I've had more than one snap off inside the head and had have it to melted and blown out with an OxyAcetylene cutting torch. Dicey to say the least. I was quite relieved to see the bolt melt out before the threaded hole in the cylinder head started deforming from the heat.
Something similar happens with screws, by convention the screwdriver tip must be more durable than the screw head, otherwise the tips would wear regulary - only trouble is that screw heads often wear before the screw gets driven, then things get messy....
Goodnight everyone!!
Good night.
Sorry, I was working.
The busy times don't seem to quit. I was glad (in a way) to be back from India, but Thursday night into Saturday afternoon was taken up with a theological conference in Seattle, after which I had a major effort to bring the Traditional Anglican ping list up to date then after our Vestry meeting at church Sunday after the service I had to update the church's website, and by then it was late Sunday night and I was ill with this hacking cough that's going around and I hadn't even really started to think about packing for tomorrow's trip, which ought to have been simple because on Thursday I return home except that on the last trip American Airlines put the coup de grace to my suiter which was really a bit big anyway for such a short trip so the goodwife is chasing down a "FlyRoll" (or something like that) which we'd seen at the store when preparing for Anchorage but the store ran out just before she got there so she's braving more Seattle-area traffic while I'm here catching up on a few things including additional updates to the church website before I take off tomorrow morning for Baltimore and laying out things to be packed including an inordinate number of chargers for the laptop, cellphone, MP3 player, PDA, etc. --at least the electronic bagpipe practice chanter and watch run on coin cells and I'm leaving the digital camera home this trip-- and... and... and... and... and... um.
Where was I...?

where can I get vastly more detailed dimensional and design information?

The last that I heard, Lockheed-Martin acquired Vought in 1990s. They likely have a corporate archive that is open to public requests (as Boeing does). I know that Boeing has a good archives staff and has top-notch customer service for interested members of the public. You might have to dig through their website or contact one of their PR folks.
ah! Lockheed Martin got 'em? okers - there's the place to start then. thanks!
hrmn... where HELL is the Navy section at?
