Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

LOL... yeah, but it would also be a full time job, just updating the config files. I have a hard enough time, just cycling through, to make sure they're all still doing, what they're supposed to be doing....

that shopping gene, is bigger than your extra Y chromosome, or whatever it is, that makes your kind, an entirely separate (tho not intolerable) species....You are too kind, sir. Ahhh, the boots. Beautiful, black(shined with vaseline) size 7, comes to mid calf laced up, with 1 1/4" sole, 2 1/2" heel. The perfect accessory with a titanium vest. :-)

Sounds perfect, now you just need to accessorize those boots, with a couple of good throwing knives.....

Ohmigod... I just realized... I'm a guy, talking fashion, and accessories, on a LAUNDRY thread.

Time to gulp the beer down, and shut 'er down for the night, before I'm totally corrupted. :)

By Tuesday morning, probably the 9:00 am update we will have accomplished:

2,000,000 points

200 FReeping folders with at least 1,000 points

Our second 100,000 point folder - Malsua

A new 40,000 point folder - VeniViciVidi (who already has over 55,000 points with his other systems Veni, Vici, Vidi and Visa)

Two more 30,000 point folders - kingu and LSimpson

and over 14,000 work units!

Not bad for a Tuesday. Hump day ought to be even better!

Wrinkle_In_Time Tue Feb-21-06 05:19 AM Response to Reply #26 5. Their highest-producing person refers to the computer s/he uses as "new acquisitions" (complete with scare quotes) and makes allusions to said computers not belonging to him/her. Yeah, there's the spirit :sarcasm: While it would be gratifying if the DU Folding team were able to add more people and processing to the Folding cause than these people, this should not be done through immoral or unethical means. Contribute what you can. Don't steal from anyone else. It's for a good cause.

Ok Jerk. I know you people read our threads, so here is the answer. Don't make insinuations, or threats, or comments about things you know nothing about. I am the MIS director, Director of Technology, Network Administrator, and Head PC tech, for a division, that is responsible for over 6000 PC's/Laptops. I have personally signed the inventory for, and am responsible for, over 18 million dollars worth of equipment, and I watch over my domain, 24x7x365, and it's my job to make sure that they're all running, and operationsl, So yeah, I "own" them.

When I started folding, I personally checked with my boss, and got his permission to begin folding. The only caveats he had was, that folding would not "interfere" with any day-2-day operations of the network. I don't run the pc's 24x7, except for the servers, everyone is throttled back to 50-80% cpu utilization, and folding gets zapped, if there is the least bit of question, about an error or performance.

Don't even begin to quiz me about Ethics. Your own people have stated, that they would "love" for me to admit that I'm a progressive, and jump ship. Find your own honest IT guys, that are willing to work their day jobs, and then coax folding out of the PC's at night. Surely, in this vast wide world of progressives, there are a few, who are honest enough to approach their bosses, with the subject. Or is there?

Keep it up, and you'll piss me off enough, to take 3 weeks vacation, and put all 6000 online, folding for the freepers. And yes, my boss knows who, and what, his computers are folding for, and has no problem with it. He himself is an avid reader of Free Republic, and as long as there is no "commercial" advantage, gained by folding, as you well know, there isn't, he could care less how the credit is given. If he wanted to use the company name, then of course, he realizes, that I could bill him for all the extra hours, after hours, spent loading and tweaking the clients. Bottom line, folding costs him Zero, keeps his top IT guy happy, and he's a freeper fan.

I realize, that's sour grapes for y'all, but that's just the way things are. Get over it, and if you're serious about competition, find some guys in the business, and start recruiting. Talk to your own bosses. Of course, I realize, that your political stance, may be a stigma, in many cases, but surely, there are a few Liberal employers out there.

y'know, sometimes, I actually fell sorry for the more honest ones, over at DU. They have to put up with dweebs like this...
I have actually been contributing to the folding@home for years. The science appears to be valuable. I think that all distributive computing projects should be required make a CO2 emissions statement.

I did some CO2 calculations for SETI@Home. The projects are not at all related but the numbers will be similar.

SETI annual CO2 = 34k to 64k SUVs driving 15k miles

Seti@home claims 506,415 active computers.

1 kilowatt hour = 1 lb of CO2 (w/ natural gas plants)
Coal plants generate twice the CO2.

506,415 * 100 watts each = 50641 kilowatts

24 hours * 50,640 lbs = 607 tons of CO2 per day

221,802 tons of CO2 per year (w/ Natural gas)
443,619 tons of CO2 per year (w/ coal)

all SETI projects = 860,120 users
377k tons to 754k tons of CO2 per year

That is 34k to 68k large SUVs driving 15k miles
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/17634.shtml

Here is a table of annual per capita CO2 emissions:

Country Year CO2e Mt / Pop M = CO2e t/person
Australia 2001 553 / 20.09 = 27.53
Canada 2003 740.00 / 31.00 = 23.87
China 2004 3583.80 / 1306.30 = 2.74
European Union 1999 4030.00 / 375.30 = 10.74
India 2001 1228.54 / 1027.00 = 1.20
Japan 2002 1224.98 / 126.93 = 9.65
Netherlands 1999 174.10 / 19.80 = 8.79
Russia 1999 1880.00 / 145.60 = 12.91
United Kingdom 2003 656.00 / 59.60 = 11.01
USA 2003 6935.70 / 290.81 = 23.85

A hybrid car generates 4 tons of CO2 per 15K miles and an SUV generates about 12 tons of CO2 per 15K miles.
Now, tell me, just what in the *ell, that proved, if anything? I think, the only reason why he's contributing to Seti@home, is maybe, someday, he'll find out who his real parents are?

I hope to hook up a second computer in the next month or so...but it's pretty amazing what has been accomplished in such a short time.
Come on freepers...do a little something extra with your machine.

I just wish, there was something, on Stanford's web site, that would list the active/inactive machines, so someone with a herd of them, could see at a glance, which ones aren't active for whatever reason.

I've got some thoughts on that...
