Freep'n Geezer Geek needs advice. (Vanity)
Self | 02/11/2006 | DonnerT

It is official. On the 15th of next I become OLD.

Were I a car instead I would become a 'classic'.
Maybe a '41' Buick, DeSoto, Kaiser-Frazier or Studebaker.

But I'm not so I'll just be an old man with clogged pipes,
sludge in the oil, a stiff differential and worn out joints.

A man with less income and no medical insurance approaching
decision time inundated by mountains of conflicting information.
(Like trying to process a program that would stretch a super-computer
with only an 8 bit processor, 32k of unreliable RAM and a cranky CPU.)

Freeperstan being the repository of the greatest minds still
functioning on the planet, I come here for advice.

Medicare, Medicaid, Part A, Part B, Part D (with 42 options)
Supplimental insurance plans out the wazooo and a red-eye headache from
all the reading on the "Official dot guv" site and I still can't figure
out which way to go or what "plan" to choose.

Surely some of you here have already traveled this route and have knowledge
of where not to go and what not to do. You have found a plan or process that
works for you. Would you share your advice with me and others who may be facing
what you already have experienced?

Most Sincere Gratitude for any and all response,

DonnerT, Freepin Geezer Geek.

I don't know what topic or category this fell into but if it is in the wrong place would you move it where you think it should be?

Thanks

Amen Bay!

AARP started hounding me at 50. If I had all the postage they have wasted I could pay full price for my heart meds for six months.

I made a private deal with eye doc last year for lazer gloucoma surgery for $200 bucks. Would have billed my insurance for nearly $600 and I would still have had to pay $200.

Hardly! :-)

I was referring to my rusty rear-end. Hmmm, doesn't sound right either.

I was referring to the difficulty of moving around with lower virtebrae grinding sciatic nerves.

A bigger obstacle than "the lawyers" is that the political will to eliminate these programs has been slyly eliminated by the fact that millions of people have already had huge amounts of money lifted from their paychecks to fund Medicare (and SS), and so don't have their money in their possession anymore. They know can't make their own free market medical choices with money they don't have, so they won't vote to discontinue the program.

Are 'government employee plans' with private companies or are they subsidized by taxpayer money?

Premiums and deductibles combined now cost more than full pay for routine office visits. Co-pays are being eliminatd and most plans have gone from 80/20 to 70/30 for hospital and minor outpatint proceedures. The term insurance for these "plans" would be laughable if it weren't so serious.

Food or heart medicine. The question looms.

I am not in your spot yet, so I haven't done the math.

But my wife got an invitation to join AARP the other day so I can hear the winds a-howlin.

I'll bump the thread and hope we get some answers.

I bet you could just about double that $1.344 billion figure.
