A midweek thread celebrating our entry into the Top 300 Folding teams in the world!

First, a big shout out to the SETI and BOINC members who have added CPUs to the effort. Remember, its Team 36120, NOT Team 0.

Next, congrats to all for bumping our team up to 667 processors and 239 user names. We have a number of new users in the team, with over 50 computers now from GetLoaded.com, a trucking website, all contributing while their owners ply our freeways keeping the nation moving.

After over a year of folding, Team 36120, composed of FReepers honoring Ronald Reagan is poised to enter the Top 300 of 44,000 teams worldwide! This is an incredible accomplishment considering our growth started just two months ago.

Want to know more? Just read below and all will be answered.

Klutz- 'fes up - you really work for Diebold, don't you!

No. I admitted earlier that I work for Halliburton. So now I guess, I gotta tell ya, that I run the IT division for Halliburton. I've even got Mr. Cheney's PC folding for the FR team.

???uhhhhh my decoder ring didn't work on that one???...are you using the blue 12-A2-4359 sub-set 732, or the revised one below?

I would tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

However, if you're serious about cracking the code, the key to it, is on a microdot, beneath the ~ key, on Bill Gate's keyboard.

... or, you could just apply the million monkey theorem..:)

- they reverse-engineered the network traffic and are sending false results back.

hmmm... now that's an interesting possibility. If I could figure out which ISP they use, put a honeypot on that subnet, it wouldn't be hard to sidetrack the packets headed for stanford, send them back an ack, edit the headers, to put in 36120 and a username, instead of theirs...

Let me put my 15 year old to work. He needs a new project to work on.. Lets call this one DU Black Hole...

WooHoo, Thanks for the info on sending false work units !!!! Now we can really kick their butts !!!! Have you tried inverting the MCI-Phaser link with the Texlon upload link ? Seems to me the results might be higher. We could be #1 if it works !!!

I tried that last week. It's great in theory, but the nulls kept getting mistranslated, and I wound up giving 60,000 points to some team from a country that only has consonants in it's name.

I'd prefer to try to hack the google toolbar variant of the folding client. Can you imagine, a 2 million point update?

Dude.. we could like, fold the universe or something... :)

OMG Klutz, I went over to the DUmp to see their reaction to your idea, and I saw this:

Democratic Underground is temporarily closed while we upgrade our servers.

BBWWWAAAHHHHHHH. They're on to you! They are right now trying desperately to stop you and your son from taking of all the folding in the universe!!

Don't they understand, we control the vertical, we control the horizontal. Just sit back and enjoy the ride, as we enter The FReeper Zone!!

DU - you WILL be assimilated.....

So...

ahem... you were able to crack that last double-coded message. Either you have access to Bill Gate's Keyboard, or you have a million monkeys in your garage. 'Fess up... :)

Democratic Underground is temporarily closed while we upgrade our servers. In order to better accomodate the high level of traffic to our website, we are currently implementing a significant (and costly) hardware upgrade. We hope that these new servers will give us the necessary power to grow and improve our website throughout this election year, and to handle unexpected traffic spikes. There is no ideal time to do a large upgrade like this. We have deliberately chosen Super Bowl Sunday, because we expect a significant number of our visitors to be offline watching the game. The upgrade began around 5:30PM ET (2:30PM PT). We expect that this upgrade will take somewhere between three and six hours to complete. If there are significant problems, then it could possibly take much longer.

They can't even read a clock, can they. I copied this at 4:19 CST (5:19 EST).

I guess their last batch of hamsters got fatigued, and they're greasing the wheels again

Seriously, haven't they heard of clustering, and sequential upgrades. I brought 10 new servers online after Katrina, and my total downtime was less than 5 minutes ( an unexpected reboot due to an overloaded UPS ).

They probally have decent equipment over there, but their IT guy got his papers from TT, so he hasen't got a clue.

The only thing they know about "clustering", is f@*%ing.

"Could my processor not be getting cool enough and a fault is built in to protect my devices?"

Laptops can really get hot with heavy device usage.  If you are not actively surfing the web or otherwise using the network, then consider removing the Linksys card until the fah core needs to send or retrieve a WU.  PCMCIA cards are always drawing current when plugged in, whether in use or not, and they really run hot.  This wouldn't normally be a problem with normal use, but if the CPU is running at 80% or more, that adds to the heat build up.  More heat is generated with a lot of drive activity, hard drive or CD or floppy.

Hope this helps.  Good Luck.

Good idea, especially if you combine it with the idea of changing the configuration to run timeless WUs and download them in batches. Then, you only need to connect to the internet sporadically.

Thanks.  I like your idea, too.

Several years ago, I had to use my laptop for a lot of heavy business stuff, downloading programs, installing and configuring, burning CDs for backups, uploading results to the office, etc.  I had to use the power supply because my battery would run down after a couple of hours and I was working about 10 hours straight at a time.

I knew the heat build up would eventually burn out some components, so I removed the battery (charging also causes a lot of heat) and used a wire baker's cooling pie rack as a platform for my laptop to sit on so it would have plenty of air circulation and not get heat reflected back from the surface of a table or desk.  That worked really well and I never had a problem.

OK, now that I can breathe again, time for more serious smack talk!!

Steelers WIN - WooHOo!!! I only got to see the last half of the game, and for all the bitching I read about the referee-ing, I saw calls going both ways, so what more can you ask for. Loving the 'fargin' trick plays! Durango, sorry for your loss. SC Swamp Fox, thanks a lot for the WU! I'll put it to good use.

(I wanted to ask, is that all you need to do to 'give' a WU to someone else is to change the User Name in the Configure screen prior to a WU being sent, or do you have to time it to when a new WU is downloaded?)

I am running the console version (5.02) as a service.

I stopped the service, edited the config file and rebooted. It seems to have worked, your name now shows up in the log file. We'll know for sure in about 4 days.
