White Castle Patron Helps Catch Robbery Suspect
Police Expect To Honor Man With Award
POSTED: 8:52 am EST January 9, 2006
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. -- A patron at a White Castle restaurant in Dearborn Heights is expected to be honored by police for his action during a robbery early Sunday morning.
Police said a 16-year-old Garden City boy armed with a machete is accused of robbing a White Castle restaurant on Ford and Inkster roads at about 2:45 a.m. University of Michigan student Peter Kim and his girlfriend walked in on the robbery, and Kim sprang into action, Local 4 reported.
"At first, I thought ... 'This can't be real. Is this a movie? Is this a joke?'" said Kim. "Who robs places with a machete?"
The suspect fled the scene, and Kim chased him across Ford Road and through a neighborhood, Local 4 reported.
"My parents own their own business and I wouldn't want that to happen to them, or anybody else in the community," said Kim.
Kim, a former high school wrestler, apprehended the suspect, took away his machete and held him until police arrived seconds later, Local 4 reported.
"He had nothing to say to me," said Kim, about the suspect.
Police said the 16-year-old in custody has a police record in the community. He was transported to Wayne County juvenile detention.
Kim said he is an Eagle Scout, and "the slogan is 'Do a good turn daily.' So I guess that was my good turn daily."
Police expect to honor Kim with an award for his actions, Local 4 reported.
I like his attitude.
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle alert.
Another Eagle soaring high.
Eagle Scout!
Atta boy Kim!
Ah, for the good old days of hanging out at the White Castle on Fordham Road at 3AM with dope dealers and schitzophrenics. And that was just the staff...
My father was an Eagle Scout/Member of Order of the Arrow.
Man, I wish we had a White Castle around here... Got a craving for some sliders.
Yep, they're still all over the place here. You can even pay using your credit card in the drive thru now.
One reason I look forward to returning to New York. Their Onion Rings rock as well.
???
I guess it takes all kinds....
Nothing like a bag of bombers and a case of Bud to make your Friday night complete... when you're 19.
Peter ain't afraid to kick some butt! Good job!

Sigh. As the northeastern urban conservative I constantly find myself defending New York and Boston as great places to live. It may be hard to imagine, but the political affiliation of the majority of your neighbors is not necessarily the most important thing about where you live. All of my neighbors in my brownstone are very liberal/democratic. I happen to like them all, even when we argue about Iraq until we're blue in the face.
In more serious news...DAMn I could go for a sack of sliders right now.
2:45 a.m.? Shouldn't this boy be home in bed? Someone needs to speak to his parents...
My thought exactly, my friend.
Remember that I live in Washington State, which make New York look sane in most regards (except for the gun laws).
White Castle is huge in the Detroit area. Almost as big as Coney Dogs.
