"I must add that those hearty Norskies live to a ripe old age, with few illnesses."

I'm only 68 but I haven't been sick since I had the measles when I was 8.

I'm only half norwegian, half german but I can count on 2 hands all the relatives on both sides of the family that have died before they were 90 in the last 200 years.

I like lutefisk but it tastes a whole lot better if you don't smell it cooking!

Isn't it a little early--like by over 11 months? Lutfisk--that's the Swedish, ergo, correct spelling--is only eaten on Christmas Eve.

When I was a kid, I had lutfisk every Christmas Eve. Grandma Henrickson prepared and made it the old-fashioned way. And, believe it or not, I liked it! The sauce makes the difference.

Lutfisk: The piece of cod that passes all understanding.

There are things worse than death, you know.

One is never having eaten lutfisk.

Ok -- Yes! (though I don't like the stuff -- especially it's texture).

A few years ago I wandered into Simak's and found microwaveable tv-dinner-styled lutefisk dinners in their specials freezer. A buck apiece! I bought some for my aunt as a Xmas present. She'd loved them! Made up her own white sauce and thought they were just fine!

No, I didn't try them myself, but had sampled this "delicacy" before. You can have it! It's haggis for me!

I've seen maggots at the Star-Kist tuna plant that are about that size. I wouldn't want to guess which would taste better...

I am a Swede and the way they fix it is in a creamed sauce, tastes kinda like small creamed new potatoes with a mild fish taste. Like Basil says, "Try it you might like it."

Yes, it has been cured in lye and dried to preserve it, but it is soaked, rinsed and and drained numerous times before it is fixed. I think the final outcome of how it will taste, is in being properly reconstituted. If it is not rinsed enough is may have a stronger taste to it. That process is not so kind to the smeller....whew!! Lucky for you, you won't be apart of that process so have a good time and enjoy a great time tasting foods that will be served. Someday, when someone asks you, "Have you ever had Lutefisk?" You can reply, "Yes, and it was not bad."

My Dear Fellow FReeper,

Over the years I have read many of your rather sane posts. I like you and would hate to lose you.

I have lived in five states and six countries. I've had (a little) haggis, blood pudding, blood sausage, monkey brains, tongue, mountain oysters, steak tartare, raw fish, seaweed, meat on a stick in Kenya, mealie pop, fish eyes, milk and blood and a number of other things that don't spring to mind.

I am not brave enough to eat lutefisk.

The truly amazing thing to me is not that a vanity has been posted about lutefisk, but that this is the second, possibly third time in the past three years that I've seen a thread about Lutefisk.

Just imagine you're eating fishy-tasting jello. Eat it with salt and butter, and it's not too bad. Not too good either, but not too bad. Have some lefse with it.
