Hangover remedies 'don't work'

The only way to avoid a hangover at Christmas is to stay sober.

Researchers who examined eight trials of traditional hangover remedies found there was no clear proof any worked.

Researchers said: "No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover.

"The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover is to practise abstinence or moderation."

Dr Max Pittler, from Exeter's Peninsular Medical School, led the research and said hangovers accounted for about £2bn in lost wages each year in the UK, mostly due to sickness absence.

Hangover symptoms included impaired memory and visual-spatial skills, light-headedness, nausea, and lack of concentration.

Even consuming less than the recommended alcohol limits substantially increased the risk of dying, said the researchers.

At Christmas, higher alcohol consumption led to a 0.4% increase in fatal poisonings for every 1% increase in sales of spirits.

Hangover symptoms seemed to be caused by the main breakdown product of ethanol and acetaldehyde, hormonal and immune system disturbances, dehydration and sleep disruption.

Remedies listed on the internet included aspirin, paracetamol, bananas, cabbage, charcoal tablets, eggs, exercise, green tea, milkshakes, Vegemite on toast, pizzas, and 'hair of the dog' alcoholic drinks.

I have never had a hang over bad enough to keep me sober.
No pain, no gain. ;-P

I agree - A ton of water, then when you get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night a ton more. And choose your booze carefully. The sweeter your drinks, the worse it'll be.

I can't drink Tequila. Bad past experience with lots of vomiting.

I drink Jack when I am in the mood to tear it up.

I go with a lot of water, a vitamin, and a few aspirin right before bed and it works wonders for me.

All that and one extra hour of sleep really helps.

That's the cure, most of a hangover is really dehydration, rehydrate between drinking and going to be and you'll be fine. Also helpful is to not drink cheap booze, the rest of the hangover is caused by side toxins (besides the alcohol itself) present in the booze and cheaper booze tends to have more toxins. Drink the good stuff and rehydrate (I generally go for about 16 to 20 ounces of water for every adult beverage I had) and no hangover for you.

That is true. The more sugar in the booze, the worse the hangover.

Eat. You must Eat.
This coming from a alcohol conesuier.
Eat a thick meal two hours before starting to drink and eat again before bed.
When you wake up in the morning, force yourself to eat a suasage biscuit with cheese or something. Force it down with a Mt. Dew or other high carb soda.
Two hours later, you are ready to start drinking again.

Sausage McMuffins With Egg. Remove 1/2 the muffin, that's not the cure.

great suggestions, Hottieboy!

I find that slowly drinking a beer again ... and then another one ... and anohter one... helps ease the hangover over.

Ugh..you & peacebaby with your greasy hamburgers.

To be honest, if I think I'm going to be hung over, I do a Mary Kate the night before. Gets it out of my system.

Yeah, well, I hate to admit I've been drunk enough that I couldn't stop throwing up (even the next day.) I think Gatorade has saved my life a few times.

Have a very Merry, Cheerry, Christmas.
