'Apprentice' Winner Fires Competitor (on live TV! As unexpected as the Spanish Inquisition...)

Just seconds after being named this season's Apprentice, Randal Pinkett made his first executive decision -- he instructed Donald Trump not to hire his competitor Rebecca Jarvis.

"I think there should be only one apprentice," he said when Trump asked if Jarvis should also be hired. "I think that's the way it should be."

While it was obvious The Donald had planned on offering jobs to both candidates, Trump did not hesitate in granting Pinkett's wish and making him the sole Apprentice.

For Jarvis this was a huge slap in the face.

Not only did the 23-year-old outshine Pinkett during their final tasks -- hosting different fundraising events -- she has an exceptional resume, including starting a children's charity at only 15-years-old.

"Rebecca, I think you are brilliant and you have a tremendous future. Basically, I am stuck with two stars," said Trump.

In the end, it was Pinkett's extensive education (he's a Rhodes Scholar who attended both Oxford and MIT) and leadership abilities that won The Donald over.

"Randal, you have been outstanding. Rarely have I seen a leader as good as you," said Trump just moments before announcing his choice during the show's live finale at the Lincoln Centre in New York.

Although Pinkett was a shoo-in to win The Apprentice from the start, he failed to impress the boss during his last challenge, running a celebrity softball game and auction.

The 34-year-old, who did not check the weather forecast and was, therefore, caught off guard when it began to rain, did manage to pull off the auction segment of the event inside the baseball arena, but Trump and his executives were disappointed in the final product.

Jarvis, however, planned an exceptional event for Yahoo, right down to the little purple flashing light ice cubes that were served in the drinks. But her team failed to raise any money for their charity, which Trump felt was unacceptable.

As the winner of this season's The Apprentice, Pinkett will oversee massive construction projects at Trump's three hotels and casinos in Atlantic City.

Meanwhile, season five of The Apprentice is set to air next spring.

Randal was on with Big Head (I say that affectionately). Just as I predicted, on the big question he was nervous, weak, and defensive. He unnecessarily padded his own record after having already won, and he felt the need to put Rebecca down. This thing is going to follow him.

More... He used the "apprenti" line again and said it was up to Donald on whom to hire. He said he felt Donald put him in a difficult position. He also said that he believed that Rebecca would have made the same decision he did. (I don't think so for a minute.) Neil noticed Randal's unease but was very gracious. To give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he was tired from the 10,000th interview today, but he did not look at all like a happy person.

He said he felt Donald put him in a difficult position.

That indeed was the case.

I don't think you have definitively weighed in with your thoughts as to who is right or wrong in this thing, but I think there was an easy and winning answer for Randal. He fumbled. You yourself said in post #69 "Randal had prepared for this possibility". I'll agree and add that therefore he has no "surprise" defense. I look at it that Randal projected to all of us that he genuinely liked Rebecca and respected her. So, why not have her on the team for the benefit of the employer, Trump? Randal's decision could only have been selfish.

Is that true? Not one envelope returned with a check in it? Wow! That's bad on the part of the rich attendees. Had a good evening and took the goodies and ran.

I kept telling my husband throughout the show that Trump was gonna hire them both!

I thought it was sort of "small" of Randall to kick the chick to the curb.

"....to kick the chick to the curb."

...

Welcome to reality, chicks get kicked to the curb all the time, even (in business) by other chicks too.

I wonder if any money was contributed at all? They did put contribution envelopes in the ditty bags.

Supposedly there is a Yahoo statement on the issue somewhere or another, I remember it being referenced in a reality tv podcast, that states that two driving reasons were behind Yahoo's contribution to both teams - the first was the insistence by Yahoo's staff of there being no pitch for the charity, the second being that no one sent in a donation from their event.

11k - that still disturbs me as being depressingly small. The series merges together a bit for me, but I could have sworn that they had done a charity auction task already and should know how to push for good 'donations.'

I'm still disappointed that Rebecca got rolled so badly by Yahoo over pitching for the charity, especially with her extensive fund raising experience. She should have secured a guaranteed contribution from Yahoo in exchange for the no-pitch at the very least, if not contributions from those companies that gave items for the goodie bags.

To me, the end tasks were a complete wash. Neither particularly impressed me, and I have to fall back on the rest of the series, and there I think Randal was a runaway winner.

WHY WAS THE LAST 5 MINUTES CUT? From what I've heard, Randal ran around yelling, "Give me my props". Two thirds of the crowd were booing SO LOUD. NBC did'nt want us to see this. Trump may be regreting this apprentice.

I though the winner got a 1 year contract to work with Trump, and the loser got a 2 year contract to work with Trump. :-)

Anyone who ever works for Randall will be looking for the knife in the back. That was a career-ending speech.

Exactly! The sucker lied about having a plan 'B' and that makes a HUGE statement. He (Randel) will throw anyone that works under him on the tracks if he needs to save his as*. I was very shocked at his performance. His true colors certainly came out. His interview on Fox was very poor, Rebecca's was outstanding. Trump, I believe, is kicking himself over this pick.
