Second Thoughts - 11-30-05

By: William W. Lawrence 11/29/2005 Email to a friend    Voice your opinion    Printer-friendly Inky Regular readers of this column are almost certainly familiar with our Ink, who was The Press mascot until she died and went to Rainbow Bridge earlier this month. Inky Dog was a well-mannered pooch who never over-ate and who always conducted herself as a lady. She behaved as if she were the queen. That's the way she was treated. Those of you who have gone through the ordeal of losing a beloved pet will understand the gloom that enveloped our house. I promised myself that I would never have another dog. I did not want to go through such an ordeal again. Then, while reading our sister paper, the Daily Times on Nov. 17, I came across the popular "Pet of the Week" feature which describes pets up for adoption at the Delaware County SPCA. The article included a picture of "Pee Wee." Wow! I thought I was looking at a picture of Ink.

He is just a little guy. He is much more friendly and out-going than Ink. He let's anybody cuddle and hold him. He is so devilish, but you can't get mad at him. He has alread chewed up a pair of Maggie's best shoes. But he cuddles up to her. Ink would only treat her as his special cheese servant,

Remember though that PeeWee isn't Ink . . . although it seems you're finding that out!

I have a cuddle dog too (although she does expect to be treated like a princess.)

That's the only protection the monsters have is their cuteness. :~D

Oh my gosh, what a beautiful, shiny coat Pee Wee's wearing! Ink is probably so happy for you. Thanks for the picture - have been wanting to see the new little one.

I lost my wonderful pup last June, just after he turned 17 years old. I thought I was prepared, but I fell apart.

A wonderful friend here on FR sent me a link to the Rainbow Bridge, and also sent me a link to a rescue site. I wasn't ready to act then, but several weeks ago adopted a puppy recued from a horrible puppy mill, and that magnificant little creature is the light of my life.

Congratulations on your adoption of PeeWee!

Never expect a new dog to be as same as the old dog. However, they can be just as wonderful in their own special way.

I'm sure Ink is smiling down from Rainbow Bridge.

Ink is ecstatic!

sorry about the loss of your buddy but glad you now have someone else to share life's journey. Pets make so many things easier, don't they?

Yes, and they add a whole new dimension to life. Not to mention that unconditional love thing.

I have a friend that adopted a puppy around the same age as mine (4 months). She brings hers over to play several times a week, and recently asked me, "What did we ever do for entertainment before we adopted these puppies?" There is no way to calculate the joy dogs give us.

I just got my first dog into my 5th decade of life(river rescue).. I had lots of cats... and I still love my kitties.. but my two doggies (added another rescue labor day of this year) are truly a blessing of fun, lvoe & like you say unconditional giving. They give so much & demand so little..

night all.. been a long day here in ohio but it is always nice to visit w/pet lovers. My kind of people.. to be sure!

I don't know what I did before my dog . . . well, actually, I spent a lot more time trying to train my cats . . . they are somewhat trainable, but once you get hold of a dog, you say, "Oh, THIS is how it works!" I guess I've learned in a hard school, 'cause dog training is easy compared to cat training!

Wow! He does look like a little Ink...he's beautiful!

He isn't another Ink, of course. No other pet could ever take her place, but PeeWee appears to have begun to make his very own special place too. :) The mutual joy and love will only grow, and I know Christmas will be happy for you, even though you'll still miss Ink.
God bless. :)

I'm happy for you. There is nothing quite as acute as losing a beloved companion. Congratulations at discovering another to stay along your side.

My dog Tippy died suddenly in 2003. It was months before I could tell anyone outside of my immediate circle about his death. I've learned that nothing replaces my lost companion. But getting another dog after a while, fills a need I have for someone to talk with, to share little joys with, who loves me unconditionally and never ever talks back. Don't think of another dog as a replacement, but as an additional friend.
