Second Thoughts - 11-30-05
By: William W. Lawrence 11/29/2005 Email to a friend Voice your opinion Printer-friendly Inky Regular readers of this column are almost certainly familiar with our Ink, who was The Press mascot until she died and went to Rainbow Bridge earlier this month. Inky Dog was a well-mannered pooch who never over-ate and who always conducted herself as a lady. She behaved as if she were the queen. That's the way she was treated. Those of you who have gone through the ordeal of losing a beloved pet will understand the gloom that enveloped our house. I promised myself that I would never have another dog. I did not want to go through such an ordeal again. Then, while reading our sister paper, the Daily Times on Nov. 17, I came across the popular "Pet of the Week" feature which describes pets up for adoption at the Delaware County SPCA. The article included a picture of "Pee Wee." Wow! I thought I was looking at a picture of Ink.

MISSING OUR DOGS
Old Men miss many dogs.
They only live a dozen years,if that,
And by the time you are sixty, there are several
The names of which evoke remembering smiles.
You see them in your mind, heads cocked and seated.
You see them by your bed, or in the rain,
Or sleeping by the fire by nights
And always dying.
They are remembered like departed children
Though they gave vastly more than ever they took,
And finally you're seeing dogs that look like them.
They pass you in the street but never turn
Although it seems they should, their faces so familiar.
Old men miss many dogs.
And from my Gun Dog book:
Regarding dogs, I like them all - pointers, setters, retrievers, spaniels... I have had good ones and bad of several kinds. Most of the bad ones were my fault and most of the good ones would have been good under any circumstances. Gene Hill

My apologies. Not to intentionally hijack your thread, but something to point out.
When clicking the link to the dog story to read, look below it for the soldiers "Final Inspection" .

He's just half the size of Ink, but he is still a puppy. The vet guessed his age at between eight month and a year. He is at the vets now for an overnight stay. He has just been neutered thing.

Awwwww.. what a sweetheart.. may you three have a LONG love affair of fur & friends! thanks for sharing. I am happy for you & although Ink will always be part of your soul, you now have another dimension of love to experience & grow with. (but some how this does NOT look like a Pee Wee ..!). When you mentioned the name on Finest, I thought we were talking about a teacup poodle!.

You are making me cry now. I just lost my beloved dog in August and while I miss having a dog, I have only made half-hearted attempts to replace him. I am glad you found Pee Wee!

Good luck with PeeWee.
The good ones cannot be replaced, but you can find other lil friends.
I know too.
Take care,
