Try to balance the national budget! very interseting try the long version http://www.nathannewman.org/nbs/
Budget Totals
Old budget was $3747.36 billion
($2672.527 billion in spending, $1074.833 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
New budget is $3342.69 billion
($2267.86 billion in spending, $1074.83 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
You have cut the deficit by $404.67 billion.
Your new deficit is $-3.66 billion.
Just like Sim City.
So far:
Oops!
You've cut so much that the federal budget now contains a substantial surplus. Many economists warn that this budget may help induce or prolong a recession, and ordinary citizens demand a refund. You might want to cut taxes or raise spending.
ping

New budget is $3340.69 billion ($2236.4 billion in spending, $1104.29 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
You have cut the deficit by $406.67 billion.
Your new deficit is $-5.66 billion. ========================================================
Note: I played the "short version".
I eliminated Education, ALIF, General Family Support, and Commerce & Housing Loan Programs. I cut Social Security by 20% and Training, Labor & Unemployment by 50%. Everything else remained the same. So, it's not perfect. ==========================================================
PetroniDE... Someone here thought my screenname was "Tired of Texas". Now that I saw your tagline, I think I know why. :-0
great post. The long and short of it is that budget can be easily balanced. It depends on whose ox is being gored. No one receiving goodies from the government i.e. the American taxpayer doesn't believe that they are not deserving of what they get. These people would howl when their subsidies got cut (not necessarily totally eliminated, just cut), but in the long run everyone, including the cuttees, would be better off.
Great Post!
SS is a HUGE chuck of the budget pie. It's a shame our Republicans in Congress didn't get behind W to get some real reform accomplished.
ping to me so I can play after work!
I used similiar techniques. I didn't touch S.S., only reduced Commerce & Housing Loan (-50%) and added/cut by 10% a few items.
I also played the short version. When I have more time, will play the long version.
This statement needs revising.
These people would howl when their subsidies get a reduction of increase, never mind cut or eliminated, but in the long run everyone, including the cuttees, would be better off.
There are things I couldn't find (I wanted to eliminate federal funding of the "arts" and of PBS / NPR). All I did was eliminate tax cuts for the top three categories, increase tax cuts for the bottom two categories, eliminate Earned Income Credits, and increase Energy development / conservation.
Budget Totals
Old budget was $3748.1268 billion
($2673 billion in spending, $1075.1268 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
New budget is $3547.21 billion
($2630.29 billion in spending, $916.92 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
You have cut the deficit by $200.92 billion.
Your new deficit is $200.08 billion.
tried to reproduce my previous results, changed a few things:
Budget Totals
Old budget was $3748.1268 billion
($2673 billion in spending, $1075.1268 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
New budget is $3545.78 billion
($2632.62 billion in spending, $913.16 billion in tax expenditures and cuts).
You have cut the deficit by $202.35 billion.
Your new deficit is $198.65 billion.
"reduction...not a cut" Agreed. In fact the Republicans just proposed spending reductions. Naturally the Jacksasses voted the bill down with the help from a few RINOs.
