Limbaugh's Adopt a Soldier Misguided (Vanity)

Posted on 11/10/2005 11:40:07 AM PST by faithincowboys

I am a fan of Limbaugh's but I think the soldiers don't need a 24/7 subscription. I think Limbaugh would've been a real mensch if he had just endorsed a standard Adopt- A - Soldier program that provided them with the normal TLC-- food, shaving kits, etc. He didn't have to get his beak wet... I would've gladly participated in a standard program, the subscription thing is a missed opportunity that risks appearing self interested. I don't care if a bonehead from Rio Linda gave him the idea.

Okay....but I keep hearing him say it will be "up and running" on Monday...the contribution drive, that is...

Wouldn't he want to be SURE the troops would actually be able to get it...before asking for donations???

I'll support that, but I didn't like the way Rush presented it. And because it involves servicemen, I think he should be very up front and transparent on it.

Your thinking is very misguided. If the caller had called Gillette, you could expect them to have a shaving program or Kraft could be expected to have a food program. However, Rush has a radio program that is on the Internet 24/7 by subscription.

I am sure not all service members will have access to the program on the Internet, but I am sure there are more than one thinks that does have Internet access.

I spent two tours in Nam(one in the Infantry, 67-68) and I had all the shaving cream and toothpaste I wanted. Of course, soldiers are always hungry, so extra food is always good. However, the entertainment value, the ability to be one iota closer to what is going on at home, has a tremendous value for morale and general conditions..

Get over it. There are plenty of organizations that send the amenities you mentioned, call one.

Yeah, and from what I could understand (I wasn't listening real closely), he won't be contributing a lot of money/resources to this.

Rush said he would be contributing a substantial amount of accounts with his "super secert" credit card.

I was listening closely.

Excuse me but it isn't a zero-sum game; there is no reason YOU (or I) can't do both. I happen to think that anything we can do to break the MSM lock on information received by the troops is a morale boost and worthy of support. That the capitalist Limbaugh benefits ... so what? Isn't that part of what they are fighting for? What, he is rich so he should do everything for free? What the hell point of view is that?

You're wrong. He said he was making a substantial contribution of his own money out of his own checking account. He also denounced those celebrities who "contribute" to a cause by giving their time but not their money. Could you be a DUmmie??

There are ways by which the "walls" can be specifically and directed opened and only for that specific "target" - Rush's show. Military knows this, Rush knows this. Big ships know this. Satellites know this.

Rush took a call for an AF officer who mentioned this very problem. He said the podcasts, which are furnished as a part of the Rush 27/7 subscription, usually do get past the firewalls.

..And the funniest part of the program is that a thank you note for every subscription created is going to be sent to Tom Harkin for causing the creation the whole scheme in the first place....LOL

I would have loved to have had something like this when I was off Vietnam. All for it.

If he really wanted to earn admiration,

Uh.....capitalists earn CA$H. Admiration comes to them for hard work. Lemme understand your perspective, who would you say has contributed more to society (in the world) and deserves more respect and admiration, Rush, or Linus Torvalds?

I know all about s corps. What you are failing to understand is that you can't just go giving away your store without justification. Sure, you can declare it as advertising, or charitable contribution. Then you have to EXPLAIN it.

You have to explain to the IRS how, where, what and why. If you do such things, your accountant goes apesh*t and sends you to the doctor's office.

There is an EXPENSE to running the 24/7, one of the other posteres pointed out that bandwidth isn't free. It has to be paid for.

Quit thinking like my union-thug, 'everyone should get "free" heathcare' buddy!

Capitalism rules!! YEA!

Great! Interested Military will be able to start signing up on Monday and the full info about how this works should be on his website by tomorrow, if it's not there already.

Hey! According to Mary Mapes, we're all supposed to be marching in lockstep. We can't even agree on this! LOL!! My two cents: I think it's a great idea, and I will be contributing, along with contributions to USO, SoldiersAngels, veterans' organizations, and through my church. One more "I thank you and honor your service" to the military can't hurt.

Limbaugh is enormously popular with servicemen (and women).

This is a gift they will really like.

That's what I was gonna say!

Rather than complain about what someone else has chosen to do - start your own program.

I was a Rush fan, but only listen occasionally. I can't stand hearing him say the same sentence over, and over, and over, and over... I get the point pretty quick, and would like to get some info I don't already know. I don't need his opinion. I am full enough, of my own. I learn most news here on FR, before he gets to it.

I agree with your premise, and disagree with those who think it is a great idea. It is a combination of both, though.

He is using this to increase his income, IMO. If he feels that he should be heard by the troops, he can do what he wishes, with his 24/7 subscriptions.

He CAN give them away. But, it doesn't increase income.

It is a fully tax-deductable thing, and would cost him nothing. But, this way, he gets to benefit both ways. He must not be willing to count on free subscriptions becoming paid, in the future. I can't think of all the free issues I have read of various magazines.

I wonder about the Rushbots. I know many of them seem pretty smart, from reading their posts, but sometimes they just can't see the forest!

Rush is a good talker, who spouts what people are longing to hear. I agree with him, most of the time, but I am no longer a devoted fan...

Maybe, he can go play golf, and let Walter Williams take the golden microphone. I will be sure and listen, because I know I will learn something.
