Herriet Miers is not going to be on the Supreme Court. Take it to the bank. 10/6/05
The democrats have been reeling since 2000 and the base doesnt think they tried hard enough to get John Roberts. With that in mind the President knows the Democrats are going to have the long knives out for Supreme Court nominee number two. I believed he picked a candidate to be sacrificed, leaving the way open for the candidate he really wants.
But . The Democrats are now flummoxed. The right does not yet support this candidate because she doesnt seem to have the conservative pedigree they desire. They (the dems) cant decide what to do. They want to defeat Bush and they want to defeat the conservatives. For now they will do nothing, in the end they will chose to defeat Bush, its the only thing that they live for.
and He(Bush)can come back with Janice Rodgers Brown....We (conservatives) will got to the mat for her....

In a word. Wrong.
I wish it were that machiavellian. But I don't think so.
GWB will seat a third SCOUTS justice in 07 (possible JRB).

Interesting theory, but the dems seem thrilled with this woman. That's the only part that worries me.
I'd think he was a cruel human being. Bush is not cruel.
Harriett Miers is going to be on the Supreme Court. Since you want to "take it to the bank," I'm willing to put some serious money on that.
You know, a lot of detractors say that she is
not qualified, because she has not been a judge,
or argued before the SCOTUS before, as if the
President had picked a law school gradutuate
from East Crawford Technical and Law School,
or the White House Flower Lady... The woman
is a long time practicing *lawyer*, who has been
swimming in the shark infested waters of DC legal
community, for almost 5 years, not to mention in
Texas, and has not only managed to keep herself
and her primary client, the President, from being
legally mauled, but the the West Wing &
Executive Branch as well.
Trying to pretend that she is some kind of
legal neophyte, just beggars reality if you
sit down and actually think about what she's
been doing over the last 20 years.
Not familiar with the SCOTUS proceedures and
legal precedents?? I doubt a week has gone
by since she joined GW's staff, that she hasn't
had to deal with at least *one* issue with
SCOTUS ramifications.
Unqualified???...I think that's a charge that
is going to be a *lot* harder to make stick
than her detractors may *assume*.
Nice try, but no cigar.
Congressman Billybob
Nice job, pal.
;)
I've heard that before. Last time I heard that, we ended up with BCRA as SCOTUS-affirmed law. If true this represents an astonishing level of irresponsibility, because she just might get confirmed anyway.
On FoxNews:
Dan Coats, former Rep, has been hired to ramrod the Miers nomination through.
In his interview with Brit Hume, he is all in favor of her, but....
==no he hasn't met her
==no he doesn't know her personally, but he will have his first meeting with her tomorrow
==no he doesn't know much about her legal career
The elitist snob right does not support this candidate because of the pedigree. You're right about that.
There's much more support for Harriett Miers outside the East Coast than you may think.
Well, they aren't having to use them, some folks on the right are doing their dirty work for them. So if Miers withdraws, those knives will be good and sharp for the next nominee.
First, all GOP senators who have said anything about Miers have only good thing to say. The assumption that the "right" does not support this candidate is a stretch. At best, the "right" you refer to is divided. But in the end, all the GOP senate will vote for her nomination.
Secondly, on the DemoRATS side, they will be as neutered as they were with Roberts. She will be extremely difficult to attack.
End result: Associate Supreme Court Justice Harriet Meirs.
And by the way, I would like to know what you are smoking...must be some really good stuff.
No, I don't think so. She'll be on the court, and I think the President expects her to be confirmed. At least I hope he does - I'd hate to think of the Supreme Court being used for silly political games.
It's also too great a risk to try something like this, hoping she'll be rejected. Plus, it's almost cruel to her if that was his intention.
Fred Thompson didn't know John Roberts before he was nominated either.
I'm no Miers supporter, but:
1. W wouldn't sacrifice one of his buddies. He's loyal to a (major) fault.
2. If the D's took this candidate down, what possible chance would a Janice Rogers Brown have? He'll have lost his political capital and the 7 idiots wouldn't line up to support a true C.
Miers is in. Let's hope W knows what he's doing (not a given). Maybe Stevens or Ginz (oh, Lord, let it be Ginz) steps down in the next couple of years and Janice Rogers Brown is W's next pick.
Sorry, but it's the best we can realistically hope for.
