Hildy also hotglued red artificial flowers on the ceiling and wall of a bathroom. I saw that episode. The bathroom was like a flowery bordello. I think Hildy takes great pleasure in seeing how far she can push the envelope for decorating.

Congratulations on the wedding anniversary. I know I think that marriage is all gazing into each other's eyes deeply. I can tell you love your husband, but your accounts make me die with laughter.

Have finally heard from my brother. They came out in pretty good shape from Ophelia though had some leaks in the house which sound like they could be a problem. Lost a few small trees and had the rest of them stripped of all leaves. He said they measured 11 inches of rain in the back yard and that didn't count all the stuff that was blowing horizontally so didn't make it into the rain gauge. Half his neighborhood lost power ... the other half ... he never lost it at his house. Some of his neighbors lost some large trees so he feels that they fared quite well.
They have weathered much stronger storms at their house so I felt that all was ok but it was good to hear from him.

I'm glad your brother came through the hurricane OK. It's always a roll of the dice.

His house is fairly new and was built to be "hurricane-proof" ... but it's on a marina right off the sound. For those not familiar with the NC coastal area, the sound is the body of water between the mainland and the barrier islands. The beaches are on the ocean side of the barrier islands. My brother lives on the mainland but quite close to the water so I worry about storm surge as well as wind damage. So far his house has come through at least 6 hurricanes without any significant damage ... :-)

How did the Outer Banks fare? I have a friend who used to own a summer home near Nagshead. Great place to vacation.

Parts of the Outer Banks fared extremely well ... I think up around Nags Head just had some wind and rain without ever having hurricane-force winds. From what I can find out Hwy 12 didn't even go underwater and that happens even in strong nor'easters. Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel was reporting from Kill Devil Hills, which isn't far from Nags Head, and he never got real bad weather.
The storm never did make landfall and that helped a lot, though there is beach erosion for most of the coastal areas. The area around Morehead City to the more southern of the Outer Banks seems to have taken the brunt of Ophelia though there is some spotty damage all along the coast.

Gov. Blanco requests that President Bush declare a major disaster for the State of Louisiana as required by the Stafford Act. A disaster declaration is made, however SPECIFICALLY MISSING FROM THIS ARE THE FOLLOWING PARISHES: JEFFERSON, PLAQUEMINES, ST. BERNARD, AND ORLEANS. This means the Federal Government, BY LAW, is specifically PROHIBITED from providing aid to the areas most likely to be struck by KATRINA!My understanding of why the parishes that were most likely to be affected in the storm were excluded in the federal declaration was that the declaration was only made to facilitate the coordination of FEMA and state and local authorities outside the projected disaster area to set up shelters, set up command posts, bring in disaster rescue teams and pre-position supplies and equipment in a circle around the projected disaster region.
FEMA is not a first responder, but this move supposedly would have made it easier for them to respond faster in this case where the damage to the area had the potential of being catastrophic. State and local officials followed normal procedure and were in charge of preparing the other parishes for the hurricane and evacuating them. That is not, nor has it ever been, FEMA's job.

State and local official were SUPPOSED to prepare the other parishes for the hurricane and to evacuate them. They attended to neither of these concerns. Their derelection of duty brought death and destruction to their own people. To deflect blame from themselves they and the Bush-hating media are pointing fingers at FEMA and President Bush. This is the MO of incompetent criminals.

When we were kids we lived in the projects. At night...the back courtyard would get quite loud with happy adults.
My brother and I shared a bedroom. We would turn a fan on to drown the sound out, too. It was a comforting sound to hear the fan oscillating.
