Sorry for the vanity; Some jerk left two little kittens outside my apartment door; They look to be about five weeks old, with their eyes open, very thin. I don't want them, but the shelters here take animals by appointment only. Any freepers in the San Antonio area need a kitty? They're pretty cute, one's white and gold and the other's a mottled brown/black. Both males, they don't seem to have any fleas, or ticks. Also, any hints on what to feed them in the meantime would be appreciated. (We don't know much about cats.) I'd really like to get them out of here before my husband gets too attached to them and insists they stay. :-)
"The mottled brown and black male sounds like a tortoise shell and are considered rare"
Very true, most tortoise shells are females. I have a blue-cream tortie female, she is just gorgeous, she sort of looks lavender in the right light. The shelter named her Violet and we kept the name because it suits her so well.
I don't mean to be gross here, but someone told me that lots of people watch for free kittens so that they can feed them to boa constrictors. BE CAREFUL.
Just be careful who you give them to...
There are those who get 'free kitties' to feed their snakes.
Sorry, but just beware.
In the meantime, canned food, a mini-litterbox and lots of love.
Unintended... but hilarious, if you think about it.
Oh no. Please don't do that. You have NO IDEA what people might do to them! They could be wanting them for any number of diabolical reasons. I don't want to get graphic, because this is a "feel good" thread.
Your best course of action would be to try a local pet store. Or try putting up a sign where you work. We recently came across a stray kitten (I think the mother pushed her out on her own), gave her a flea bath (you should too, I can almost guarantee you they are loaded with them), had her for a week, and someone from my husband's work took her. Little "Abby" is doing quite well now (Thanks go to Chris and Krista from Rock 107!).
Also , at that age, they shouldn't be too much trouble. You can probably still keep them in a box so they are out of harm's way. But when they hit 7 weeks, look out!
They make kitten formula in cans now and all of the above posts are good advice as far as feeding them.
Good luck and God Bless the little kitties!
(I'd take one, but we're up in the NE, and already have three terrors of our own!)
Sorry, it's not possible. Unless they can climb, the cat'll scratch the crap out of the dog and the dog'll be running away before the cat even needs to climb. Cats rule, dogs drool, and yip and cringe and...
Halle is a totally white long hair. Her first brood was two kittens, one white and one black!!!
I put a dogloo on my front forch and it's my "Cat House". I feed them twice a day and they get pounce treats at night.
If you don't have anything nice to say about perversions of nature, don't say anything at all. Post photos!

It depends,
their Mama usually shows them. Seems most cats I know do OK and don't need help.
My advice is keep them in a small area with a small litter box they can get into. If they show ANY signs of going outside of the litter box, immediately put them in it, and they get the picture then.
Also, if the do 'go' outside the box, you can put the droppings in the box as a clue of 'this is the right place'.
LOL. Cute picture.
That old thread of yours is terrifice, S&A. How's the cat? You still have just the one?

I have Jack Russell terriers and their sole purpose in life is killing small critters.
At 5 weeks, I'd give them some milk with IAMS canned kitten food mixed in. Gradually increase the proportion of kitten food, 'til they're eating the canned food only.
And I'd second the warnings about being careful who you give them to. Boa owners are the least of the problem -- at least that's a very quick death. There are people who sell cats to wholesalers who provide dead cats for biology class experiments, etc. The cats are often treated VERY poorly before they're killed, since they're just being rounded up by someone who's looking at them as livestock worth $5 or so a head, and who doesn't care if they're starving and dehydrated for several days or longer.
I'm rooting for your husband to get attached :-)
I thought my dog would feel the same way about kittens because he hates the feral neighborhood cats. But a few months ago I brought over several 5 week old kittens that had been raised with a dog since birth. Well, I couldn't believe it but one of the kittens and my dog took right to each other. Needless to say I adopted her and they're now great pals.
It's almost like a miracle. All my recent cats have been strays - never been indoors - and show it to them once and they never do anything outside the litter box.
Please tell me where you live, I think the kittens need company and I have a lots and lots for them. Just found another litter yesterday.
Um if the male really is a tortishell KEEP IT! Male calico's and tortishells are VERY VERY rare and are worth a lot.
Central San Antonio; Are you in Texas?
