Most of us take pride in the fact that we have some knowledge of proper nutrition and diet. Many of us run, bike, or do other vigorous exercise to maintain or college figures.

But there are some foods, often discovered in our youth, that no matter how nutritionally worthless they may be, are just too darn tasty to give up.

We may not tell our friends and loved ones, and we'll hide them under the other groceries in the supermarket, but somehow these guilty pleasure find a way into our gullets!

So without further adieu...

Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Foods

5. Velveeta Cheese. Who knows if there is any dairy product in this stuff. But darn it tastes good smothering nachos or melted on a toasted cheese sandwich!

4. Chicken in a Biscuit. The perfect cracker to compliment Velveeta. It's good to know that MSG and powder made from dry chickens can be so addicting!

3. Vienna Sausages. Though these little gems are not likely to show up as an appetizer at a fancy party, give me that yummy taste of Mechanically Separated Chicken and pork over cavier anytime!!

2. Sardines. Something about little stinky fish in a can turns off alot of people. But the fond memories of camping trips eating these oily creatures on a saltine cracker....

1. Hot and Spicy Pork Rinds. I know these delicious fried chunks of pig fat made a comeback during the Atkins craze. But some of us never abandoned these carnivorous treats! PETA be damned!

I'll admit to liking sardines - King Oscar brand are the best, by far, especially the ones packed in olive oil. Great with crackers, or I like 'em with a little lemon juice, eaten straight out of the can. I love kipper snacks, too.

Now that I have a roommate...I've kinda given 'em up. No hiding the smell of the things. *sigh*

But they're healthy! No guilt on that score!

Did you know the government lists Velveeta cheese in one of the main food groups? No kidding, it qualifies as "dairy" in your kid's lunchbox.

Yeah, I was wondering where CHOCOLATE is, too.

I don't think they're listing desserts, just things that might qualify as "food". (But chocolate is a major food group all on its own for me). ;-)

If you are doing sardines, it's gotta be King Oscar sardines, red package, packed in olive oil, on real saltines with all the fat and salt.

My first heavy-weather ride as a Coasty on a small boat, they tried to mess with me and another kid by eating sardines. He puked on the coxswain, then the other 3 crew saw that and puked. I asked if they had another can of sardines. I was hungry.

Ketchup qualifies as a veggie. So do french fries.

What about those nasty "fruit" pies that are sometimes as cheap as four for a dollar at gas stations, or used to be. I've had a lot of those over the years...sometimes in the summer my siblings and I would walk into town (six miles), get scads of the cheapest junk food we could find, and later bum a ride home with Dad when he got off work.

Oh, I loved the chocolate Quick. I always put the QUick in 1st, and purposely did not stir it well so I would have a spoonful of the moistened powder in the bottom of the glass!

I have to have canned sardines about once every 3 months. Put in bowl, pour mustard over, mash up and grab some crackers. Also like canned smoked oysters the same way. I think I just decided on what to have for lunch! Have some spicy pork rinds at home may snack on them tonight but was saving them for something else. Saving spicy pork rinds for what other use you ask???. Put them in blender grind up very fine and use as a coating for fried shrimp instead of your regular coating/batter. Yummy!!!

Aaaaaamen! I love those things. Used to stock up on them whenever they were on sale. Something comforting about having a nice stack of sardine cans in the cabinet. ;-)
