Pierce Brosnan Out As James Bond, 007

A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

We already had Roger Moore.

And with the exception of For Your Eyes Only, they are unmitigated cr@p... IMHO, again. ;~D

Part of the problem (besides scripts) being you knew Roger was a nice guy, almost teddy-bearish it seemed at times, but James Bond was a cruel SOB.

I've heard Christian Bale's name floated as a possible Bond. I haven't seen him in anything since Empire of the Sun, but he certainly has the right look... good-looking, but with a 'don't mess with me' coldness behind the eyes.

Hi Argh. Thanks for the ping.

Like I said yesterday, I think PB had a few movies left. He wasn't a bad Bond.
I have just started watching Bond movies with my pre-teen sons; I haven't had too much interest in them up to now (and I still have problems staying awake through any of them). We all think that the old movies are hilariously bad. One thing has improved over the years---the action movie genre!!

(and, yes, I have my flame-proof suit on today!)

The Bond franchise needs to be shelved for 2 decades or so, then aired out, then try something new.

I could never take any Bond movie seriously where Bond drives around in a silly little BMW.

Bring back the Aston Martins and then we can talk about who should be driving them.

The only redeeming factor of On Her Majesties Secret Service was Telly Savalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

What does everyone think about remakes of some of the originals but not updating the technology.

Basically shoot "You only live Twice" again with the same technology available at the time but update the special effects to today's standards.

That said, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favorite Bond movie...

It was one of Fleming's best 007 novels IMHO. And it was a great bond movie, mainly because it didn't have as many absurd gadgets, it DID have the lovely Diana Rigg, and it was one of the best-written of the Bond screenplays. Still, Lazenby's performance was extremely weak.

He is Batman in this summer's "Batman Begins". He was very good as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Michael Caine was outstanding as Alfred.

Alfie to Alfred. How depressing.

I have a hard time with the American Psycho saying, "James, James Bond."

Come to think about he look to much like a boy scout. I would like to see more stunts and gadgets with a bigger story.
