A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.
"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.
Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.
"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.
He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).
His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

Didn't we see a story just like this about a year ago? Bizarre. Wonder if they'll go "color blind" casting for the next Bond. That's the "in thing" now.
Don't recall that, but in April Dame Dench said Pierce would be back for the next one.
Celebrity can be so fleeting. . .
Thought they were already narrowing down the selections for his replacement some time ago?
No loss. I never saw one of his Bond movies anyway.
< Barf-o>
It sounds like he was asking for more money than the studio was willing to pay.
I think Jude Law would be perfect for the role. James Bond should always be English as Shaft should be African American, and Indiana Jones should White and American. I wouldn't cast a Korean to be Luke Skywalker in the 1977's Star Wars. We must not be so thin skinned with respect to characters written with specific attributes, but not all. I grew up with the Cosbys a black family along side the Keatons and thought nothing of it. Later we even had trailer trash represented in Rosanne. I never would have thought that the Cosbys should adopt someone for the sake of diversity.
Over the years, James Bond was portrayed by a Scot, an Australian, an Englishman, a Welshman and an Irishman;-)
I think that would be a good idea, actually. The series could use a jolt. I coudn't even make it through the last movie, it was so dull.
Where was the sarcasm tag? David Niven was a better Bond (in the spoof Casino Royale) than Lazenby. For that matter, Leslie Nielson was a better Bond (even though he didn't play Bond) in the Spy Hard franchise than Lazenby. I think a cardboard cutout of Timothy Dalton, with Conan O'Briens lips moving during the speaking parts, would have been a better Bond than Lazenby. In case I have not been clear, even if they were to cast Ashton Kutcher (Demi Moore's current boy toy) as Bond, Lazenby will go down in history as the worst Bond ever.
Lazenby is the Worst Bond Ever!
Well, he wasn't bad, but he wasn't great either. I just wish he had done a couple more movies to grow into the role. They asked him to, but he refused (and later regretted it).
That said, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favorite Bond movie... Great action sequences (the ski chase), the lovely Diana Rigg, and one of John Barry's best musical scores.
a "gay" Bond, perhaps?
LOL. Maybe worth a try. Or how about a female one? Jane Bond, anyone?
You're right about the music, ecurbh, some of it was striking.
We already had Roger Moore. Thanks anyway. :^)
No! Lazenby was pretty damn good.
Hi, Argh!
It ain't a James Bond score if it ain't John Barry... IMHO.
I'm with you there.
