Heh! This has been brewing since MONDAY! When he told me he changed it to the evening to accommodate some self-employed dude, I just felt awful!
I'm all for looking good and "moving up in the company" extra work...but if he can get it done during business hours (not always possible, I know), that's what I want him to do...make it a priority to come HOME.
That is what so upset me...home wasn't the priority, nor was school. That dude's schedule was.
He told me he'd go back to the normal time he's done it. The guy can adjust or find another monitoring person to work with. For the dude, it's not that big a deal...there are other options for him.
Well, that's sortof what I meant... with exempt positions comes the responsibility without compensation at all for the overtime.
I was exempt as a secretary at one position in the past, when I was in the corporate ratrace....
Heh..at one stinking job I used to have it didn't matter how much you got done during the day. If the POS manager didn't see you working after hours and on weekends, you were a slacker.

He's overly accommodating. He never asks "What's in this for me?" or even tries to figure it out.
He's the same way with me! He just does without question and then is always kinda shocked to find out there really was something in it for him! The chickens, for example. He built that coop to my specifications and to his delight, he has fresh eggs for breakfast every morning. Even when we don't have very many, the fresh eggs go to Dad, because he enjoys them so much.
He's stared out the kitchen window at those chickens and muttered "Who would have imagined..."

It sounds hard, 2J, and I'll bet Steve feels bad about the time he pulls away from you. It's just as hard for him not being around as it is for you not being around him. I know you know that, and I'm glad you're blowing the steam off here and not at Steve. Because it'll just make Steve feel worse and he's got a lot on his plate right now too.
There's also a difference between "permitted to do it during office hours" and "encouraged to do it". Could the office be putting pressure on him to do more of his hours outside of business hours?
I imagine I'll be a lot more understanding when we get that big paycheck. But at 28K take home a year, I feel like they already get their pound of flesh. And if there were a chance for him to move up in the city, I'd look at it differently too...but there really isn't.
But now there's the paper. The city told him they'd pay him overtime for the paper (his thesis). It was a study they needed done. Then the grant fell through and he didn't get any overtime. But it's all good. I'm happy as a clam with how it worked out. Overtime would have been sweet, but the fact that they let him stay and work on it in the quiet of his office every single evening and on some weekends was compensation enough.
No, it was just that guy that has nothing to do with the city or Steve's office or anything. He told Steve he couldn't do it during the day anymore and instead of Steve saying "Sorry about that." Steve switched to the evening.
This organization is made up of all kinds of volunteers...even private citizens can volunteer. But companies do it and the city does it and even the county does it because it's good PR.
This guy does it for the same reason...it's good PR for his company.

Oh, and the other people in Steve's office do it during business hours too. Except for a few people, but I think they view it as a social event and actually enjoy going out with their pals and doing the monitoring. They do it on the weekends and such. Actually do it more than they have to. They really enjoy it. That's great! Dandy for them! More power to them!
It's just not us.
Ok, here's my final comment on this situation...
When I was working full time, before we had a family...the hospital I worked for would participate in health fairs...or sometimes they'd give away free flu shots or something. I would volunteer to do it (it wasn't as expected as it is with Steve, but nonetheless, it looked good). I loved it! Nursing was my passion and I really loved it and enjoyed spending a day off doing it.
Steve LOVES what he does and after school is over, I don't think it will bother me when he volunteers for things. IF they are things he can't get done during business hours (like the Pollution Collection Event and the Creek Cleanup). I can actually see Steve volunteering for this stuff even after he retires! It's his passion!
We just don't see him enough *at this current time* for him to accommodate someone else's schedule.

Loved that book as a kid. Loved a lot of Dahl's weird, dark humor. The Gene Wilder version cleaned it up and sanitized it too much for my liking.
Here it is 10:30 in the morning and we have had only .02 inches of rain. The sidewalk under the tree is still dry. That storm is going to have to start really producing for us to get the 1/2 inch the weatherweenies promised us!
So that means we all have to see the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie?
