The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, this is a volunteer thing, but the thing is, Steve has the option of doing it on work time and that is what we discussed years ago, before he even started school...I wanted it done before he came home from work because I'm not a big fan of "comp time"...I think it's a bit shady. It's not documented anywhere, like overtime is, you know?

What upset me was Steve has the upper hand, he's responsible for the testing of this stream and can do it all alone if he wants to, first thing in the morning (It takes about 2-3 hours). The guy that wanted to do it in the evening has nothing to do with Steve...isn't a co-worker or anything, just a businessman from another company, and the guy actually owns the company. The guy didn't want to take time off during the day so he told Steve so.

And Steve thought nothing of accommodating this gentleman, even though it took away from his schoolwork time and if school wasn't an issue, it would have been his family time Steve gave away!

Well, it went over like a lead balloon. We don't get to see him enough for him to make accommodations to some guy that is just a volunteer. (Insert very upset 2j here.) My little Joshua has begged me THREE NIGHTS IN A ROW to wake him up when Dad gets home so he can visit with him! That's just heartbreaking to me and I begrudge some stranger even a minute of Steve's time when we see so little of him.

We discussed it at length last night and I think Steve has an understanding about how adamant I am about it. I know there are time when he's going to have to do this for "looks" on his own time...I don't like it but I understand. And it will look good on his resume, you're right. My beef is if he has the option to get it done during work hours, he should do so, instead of accommodating some self-employed dude.

In a strange turn of events, it turns out that today is Friday for me after all. I have to take the in-laws to get their MD drivers licenses. So it's a quasi-hurray.

Also discovered a telecon that starts 30 min before my work hours end. *sigh* And telecons always run loooooong.

It's too muggy to even *think* about exercise. Ugh. I spent an hour in the garden picking green beans (got about two quarts!) and came in absolutely soaked in sweat. Yuk. And it wasn't even that hot outside.

How can you be getting things out of the garden already? I reckon maybe you planted before I did? I've got cherry tomatoes getting ripe, and lettuce. Nothing else is ready.

Reasonable enough. Perhaps the business man is recruiting???

*Sigh* It's just that things are kinda slow around here right now. I've got one set of standards to make up before the weekend and that's it! The days kinda drag when things are slow.

Jeepers. I really don't want to see that movie... If he boycotts it, do I ~have~ to see it?

No. However you are still required to mock him. ;-)

My tomatoes are way behind. They got hit with that frost and played dead for a month. Otherwise, I'm doing good because I planted everything the last day in April - right before I spent a month in NM. When I got back and cleared the weeds I saw that I had to reseed about half the garden. So everything'll be a staggered crop.

The radishes were vey fast - I'm on my second batch and will have to pull the rest soon before they get bitter. I got a great batch of sugar snap peas a couple days ago and those are about done. Turnips came out two weeks ago, beets last week. Still not sure what I'm going to do with either of those. :) I cheated with the onions and used sets. Next year I'm going to cheat really bad and start everything in peat pots in March. (if I remember)

I'm still figuring out growing times and stuff.

That, and Nana still says I need more dirt.

They do. After 6 mos of super hectic craziness around here I really, really needed a break. Now I've had 2 weeks of not that much to do and I'm restless and irritable 'cuz I'm almost bored.

Heh. I'm already thinking about fall planting. I think a stand of collards would look good beside my front walk.

When she says you need more dirt, is she talking depth? I only have about 8" above ground, but I dug into the ground beneath the raised bed a couple inches to loosen it up.

Or is she talking more area? You can grow an awful lot in a small area. I'd recommend that Mel Bartholomew book that 2J and Sq turned me on to. Has planting schedules and everything.

Heh. I'm just bored! Finished my dirt study and waiting for the leaf samples to come in. I do get a trip to the Portland area in a couple of weeks to help start some foliar residue studies.
