Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I currently keep it corked in the fridge...are you saying that the taste would keep better if I kept it at room temp in a cupboard?

It might be. I usually store whites in the fridge and reds at room temp. But really, when it takes a week to drink the bottle, you can't do too much about the last day or two.
Keep it sealed as tightly as possible, and recork it as soon as you pour a glass each night.

Ok! I'll give it a try next time...just recorking and putting it in the cupboard.
You can see how I could benefit from a smaller bottle, though...huh?

Maybe you could try finding a wholesaler for some of those little bottles like they serve on planes. It would probably up your costs though...I've never seen them for sale.
To: Corin Stormhands
I just found them on a website...187ml bottles. That's close! 150ml would be better...

This store is just down the street from me about six miles...
Bottles.
I guess I'd need green bottles, though...maybe it keeps better in green bottles?

I'm not sure you have to have the green bottles. Just a simple google I found that it's mostly tradition because glass used to always be green. But other websites say that the UV rays would harm the wine. But that same website asks "why are you storing your wine in the sun?"

JenB: Who was Ernest T. Bass?
To: Corin Stormhands
Well? Are you gonna tell me or do I have to go look it up myself?

Exactly! I imagine I'd keep mine in the cupboard. The kit I want to get makes 23 liters.
Wonder how many little bottles that is...23000ml divided by 187ml...
That's 123 little bottles! Four months worth!

Howard Morris Character actor, voice artist (you've heard his voice), director.
"Ernest T. Bass" was a recurring role he had on the old Andy Griffith show.
To: JenB
He's tried the Auzzie Shiraz types, but didn't like them; too dry. I know the Red Zins are dry as well, but if he's only drinking 4oz or so, he could probably stand it. I'll look for an Aussie Zin, though.
Paul took a Wine class at Cornell last semester, and has become much more knowledgable about varieties, etc. He's brought home some good ones! We had a German Reisling the other night that was almost too sweet for me! He's got another one from Alsace that we're going to try.

Lay the bottle on it's side, 2J, to keep the cork damp. The biggest problem is that when you uncork it, the oxygen gets in and causes the wine to degrade. They actually make a device that inserts an inert gas into the bottle to displace any oxygen, so that when you re-cork it, there's no oxygen to degrade the wine and it lasts longer. Cool, huh?

Mmm.... Shiraz...
I like dry wines! Shiraz is my favorite red, Sauv Blanc is my favorite white. Reislings are almost always too sweet for me, Merlots are too oaky... I haven't really had red zins but I don't like white ones at all.

We had a couple of bottles of this
Pinot Noir from Oregon the other night. (don't get too excited, there were seven of us)
It was mighty nice.

One of the posts on that thread mentioned that Frank Gorshin had died last week. Dang!
