If you think running Windows is like living in Crack Alley with no lockable doors, but "need" Windows to run different applications, you should try Win4Lin. If you have a licensed version(?!) of Windows xp or 2000pro, you can run a windows "session" within Linux.

VM ware allowed one to do this before, but it was close to 300 dollars. You can download this for less than a hundred. My copy installed nicely. So far, it beats crossover office. If there is interest in the thread, I will post any problems I have tweaking it.

without surrendering control to the Windows guest operating system.

MSoft will look for a way to "break" this feature so that the user will have fits trying to make this work.

The software world is littered with such carcasses.

Okay, maybe I'm a little cynical. I hope this really works.

I was just discussing my interest in getting away from Windows last week with our office computers.

Windows and her applications tends to be full of bloatware. Seriously, what is the difference in Money FSB 2004 and Money FSB 2005 code other than different graphics and another $100 per license upgrade?

Let us know how stable it is and isn't there a MS Office-like application available as well?

I run VMWare for those rare occasions. It works well. I've never tried Win4Lin.

Yeah. Check out Open Office.org.

$100 on top of the cost of a Windows license doesn't sound like much of a bargain. I am running Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes (including Designer and Administrator clients) with Crossover Office, which costs $40 and requires no Microsoft license.

I am fairly new here, but is pasting promotional materials from a website for a commercial product allowed here?

Thanks. The removal of the ad answered my question.

The product does not support either Windows XP or Windows NT, according to the product overview. That would seem to limit its appeal to its target market, corporate IT managers.

VMWare pretty much rocks IMO. I use it for running windoze compatibility tests. It's also a great way to test out the latest Knoppix images when they come out.

VMWare's greatest strenth are their enterprise products though. I think they ought to lower the price of the workstation version so as to build familiarity and mindshare amongst folks.

I see. And what did your computers have to say about it?

;)

The guy found something new and put it up. He also offered to do more detail if people wanted it. This is as much product promotion as the apple OS updates and the post about new features in windows..

sorry for posting the ad. it was the only like I had to what I thought was a good product.
I am not affiliated with them in any way. I like it b/c it runs paperport, which is our scanning/imaging software, plus you can push the visioneer scanners we use in our insurance office.
I don't knwo what you are talking about not supporting xp. I am running xp right now under xandros. You must be looking at an old version. Win4Lin Pro is written specifically for windows distros on an NT build.

The 29$ product does not support NT or XP but the enterprise version 99$ does:

Win4Lin Pro™ is the flagship product of the Win4Lin product family. Using Win4Lin’s high performance virtual computing environment (VCE),

Win4Lin Pro runs virtually any Windows 2000 or Windows XP application as intended, without the need to patch the host operating system (e.g. no need to patch the Linux kernel). This next generation product is the perfect solution for the technical workstation, home, or enterprise Linux user. Organizations wishing to migrate to Linux need wait no longer because they can now run those Windows legacy business applications that until now have prevented them from moving forward.

Yea we run ESX in house and have replaced about 50 1u servers with 4 4u horses that with vmotion allows us better failover and heartbeat times..

you have nothing to be sorry for, you posted a thread about a tech product that Linux geeks might find interesting.. People do software reviews here all the time..

How has that VMotion stuff worked for you? I saw a demo of a migration of a fully operational database server from one machine to another. It was one of the most impressive tech demos I've ever seen. It takes a lot to make me go "wow", and that did it. I'm interested in how well it actually works in the real world.

We have had no problems with it, nothing impressive as moving an online DB. But we have moved around live webservers, fileservers, domain controllers and the like with no downtime..
