Unable to drag-and-drop .jpg images from Windows Explorer
self

Posted on 03/18/2005 5:39:27 AM PST by rudy45

I am using Windows XP Home and PowerPoint 2000.

When I try to drag a .jpg file from Windows Explorer onto a PowerPoint slide, all I get is a text object that lists the location and name of the file, not the image associated with the file itself.

What's going on, and how can I actually get the image into PowerPoint via drag and drop? I know I can do an "insert/picture/from file" but I'd rather drag and drop.

Thanks.

Windows doesn't do 'drag-n-drop' as good as - oh, say a Macintosh does.;-)

Besides, what's so hard about "insert/picture/from file"? It's Windows babe, be thankful you don't have to go to the command line.

Thanks. Yes I know I can do an insert picture from file. The point is, though, that I SHOULD (?) also be able to do a drag and drop. If there's a problem in Windows with my doing so, I 'd like to know about it because it could affect me some other way in the future.

Thanks.

So far, the best way I can find to do it, is to right click on the pic and copy and place the curser where you want the pic and right click paste.

I'll see what else I can figure out.

Were you able to do it in the past? If yes, what have you done to your system in the interim? Are you sure it is a 'feature' of your software? Might want to check the help file within the program or the manual for the progam.

That's pretty elegant. and that's pretty much how I do everything in Windows. In Windows the 'drag-n-drop' is just too iffy. Sometimes it's OK, like selecting a bunch of files in one directory and dragging them to another directory, I'll do that 'cause I know it's gonna work. But dragging into an open document in a third party application, no thanks. I mean, try it, if it works, fine, if it don't, do something else.

Right click and go to copy. then in your power point slide, right click and paste. That should work.

Thanks. However, I STILL get only a text object with the file name... The same thing happens if I copy and paste, or drag and drop into a Word document.

Funny thing, though, the drag and drop DOES work when the destination is an Outlook Express new message.

Whatever the problem is, it's Powerpoint, not Windows. I can drag/drop to Word. I can't find anything in the Powerpoint options that controls drag/drop though.

There ya go. Powerpoint is usually part of a 'suite'. Well, what about the other applications in the suite. Does it work in those? If yes, then you've really narrowed the problem down.

And here's a thought - maybe your images are too big for the powerpoint viewer to handle? Try something you know is small.

Have you ever had this functionality previously? Have you been able to do this with a previous version or did it just stop working in your current versions?

Here's a thought. Instead of dragging and dropping with the left mouse button, drag and drop using the right mouse button. You might get a context menu to pop up when you release the button. This works inside Explorer when moving files and you get a context menu popup that gives you options on how you like to move the file...copy, move, create shortcut...etc.

Hmm. Have you tried doing this in OpenOffice Impress?
