The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah but offering 25% lower is probably a bit much.

You don't ask, you don't get! ;o

Or you can just fill out all the forms when you get here. They say that's ok.

I'll have to take his word for the declension stuff, though I do know that the 'us' is usually pronounced 'oos' when you're singing Latin.

I went a little while ago to pick up our utility trailer, and in just the short time I was standing outside the place, my FACE started hurting from the cold!

And of course the "correct" pronunciation of Latin is up for debate. I'm fairly sure scholars think "Church" Latin is pronounced differently than how Caesar would have said it.

Varsity...by Pilot. I used a bunch of 'em.

Parker has a nice fountain pen, not a fancy spendy one either. Trying to remember the name of it. They use the same name and body style in their roller ball pens, and they use a plastic disposable cartridge of blue or black ink.

And considering how long the Empire was around the way 'Caesar' pronounced it drifted quite a bit.

Vector? Or is it just that Varsity is reminding me of that? There's also the Frontier, but that's a little more spendy...probably $25 or so.

Hah, yes, but I was referring to Julius. Isn't he who people think of if all they say is Caesar?

Jen, that is like saying isn't Nicholas who everyone thinks of when you say Czar?

Oh yeah. I bought a Latin curriculum at first that had the hard 'C' pronunciations, e.g. Cicero being pronounced as 'Kikero'. I was just too used to the 'Liturgical' Latin though, and bought "Latina Christiana" that uses that pronunciation.

I have cousins whose last name is Csaszar, and they pronounced it Caeser, though the Hungarian pronunciation is more like 'Chazar'. Unfortunately for him, my Aunt named her second oldest son, 'Julius'. ;o)

Well, here's the first knife with the new Hobbit Hole logo. It's a bit of an "oopsie" because Jeff realized it was a bit too small, and could have been at least twice as big. But since the logo is scaleable, the next ones will be done to take advantage of the space available.

If anyone is interested in this "rare factory error", freepmail me, and it's yours for half price, plus postage. Otherwise, it will go into my collection.

I've also been thinking about the two Camillus "Sierras", and am beginning to question the necessity of offering the small (they call it "medium") size. Here's the photo again, along with a Ka-Bar Dozier:

The smaller Camillus is smaller than the Ka-Bar, which I consider about the ideal size to pocket carry. The small Camillus is almost a key-chain knife. I don't think there's a GI that needs anything that small.

On the other hand, the big Camillus still fits in a BDU pocket, and is big enough to take on some chores out in the field, too. It's not a "fighting knife", but is a whole lot more scarey than the little one.

I'm now thinking we should go exclusively with the bigger Camillus. That opportunity wasn't available with the CRKT or Ka-Bar, but is now. Plus, I'm hoping Camillus will continue to be a stand-up company, and give us a deal on them.

Comments, as always, are appreciated. You folks are, after all, the "board of directors".
