Alone in the Dark
Edward Carnby (Christian Slater), detective of the paranormal, unexplained and supernatural, investigates a mystery (the recent death of a friend) with clues leading to "Shadow Island" that brings him face to face with bizarre horrors that prove both psychologically disturbing and lethal, as he discovers that evil demons worshiped by an ancient culture called the Abskani are planning on coming back to life in the 21st century to once again take over the world... and only he and a young genius anthropologist with an incredible memory (and his ex-girlfriend), Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid !), stand in their way, at a gateway to hell. Standing in Carnby's way, however, is the impact that a brief encounter with an evil spirit called the Queen had upon his mind, as he slowly finds himself overpowered by the forces of darkness as they eat away at his very sanity...

This is a wild ride!
An evil doctor, zombies,
big monsters from Hell,
secret Fed soldiers
charged with killing the zombies
and monsters from Hell,
and all the good guys --
including Tara Reid! -- are
really good marksmen . . .
I would never say
this is a good movie, but
it is like a cross
of Indiana
Jones, Alien, and Blackhawk
Down. I do admire
the filmmakers for
tossing all these elements
into one movie!
And, though I will not
give away the film's ending,
I will say they don't
cop out like the end
of Independence Day with
a cheap plot gimmick.
It's not a good film,
but it was fun to watch, and
it has Tara Reid!

Sounds interesting. Christian Slater looks, like, my age these days. Time flies. Is Tara Reid the one with the famous breast implants?

Well, this movie BOMBED badly at the box office. Didn't even make the top 10. Most games to movies (yes, it was originally a game) sucked. Even Resident Evil (which I enjoyed) isn't that good. Fun movie, but I knew it wasn't that good of one.
With that being said, nice to see SOMEONE enjoy this movie. At least a movie like Resident Evil had SOME good reviews. This one, if you check Rotten Tomatoes, barely got ANY! 1% of all critics enjoyed it! Looks like a...ummm...wait for television event?

Our local mall does
bargin shows early. I went
and it turned out that
it was only me!
I had a private showing
in a full size show
because the movie
had gotten such horrible
reviews. I didn't
know it was based on
a game, but it did capture
a comic book feel,
but no pathos like
in Spiderman with the guy's
old uncle dying.
I'm wondering if
that plays into why critics
hated the film so --
it's comic book-like,
but pre-Stan Lee comic book --
just thrills and action
without pretentious,
dark social commentary.
I might see it twice . . .

I think Tara's breasts are "famous" for falling out . . . Her dress straps always
seem to break just when the photographers are there . . . (That having been said,
in this film, although she has one quick love scene, she doesn't get naked . . .)

Isn't she about half Christian Slater's age? Creepy-beetles.
I'll keep an eye out for this at the library ... I like the "paranormal detective" genre. Jules DeGrandin (from the 1920's) is my favorite.

I thought the film of "House of the Dead" managed to make some action scenes
visually cool, but then I thought the movie got bogged down trying
to explain the plot . . . "Alone in the Dark" kind of reminded me of
some of the action in "House of the Dead," without the boring details.
(Although I gather the film "Alone in the Dark" makes some big changes
to the game's mythos -- the plot of the film isn't exactly the game's.)

a young genius anthropologist with an incredible memory (and his ex-girlfriend), Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid !) I'm reminded of Denise Richards attempting to portray a nuclear physicist in the Bond movie a few years back. I'm prepared to suspend a lot of disbelief for a 007 film, but there is a limit.

For the heck of it,
I looked it up. She's not that
much younger than him:
Birth Name: Christian Michael Leonard Gainsborough Birthdate: August 18, 1969 Birthplace: New York, NY Occupations: Actor, Director, Producer Quote: "My mistakes do happen on a grand scale and very public level. They're humiliating, embarrassing. But if nothing bad happens to you, you'll just continue to act ridiculous." --USA Today, December 14, 1997 |
Birthdate: November 8, 1976 Birthplace: Wyckoff, New Jersey Occupation: Actor Quote: "I can make a scene that's not supposed to be sexy, very sexy. It's a power you're born with. It's not a physical thing, it comes from inside. It's all in the eyes." --Movieline, November 1998 |

House of the Dead (also a game to movie) did pretty bad in the box office too. Also from Uwe Bolls. From what I gather, it was meant to be a B-horrorish movie, but still, even then, it bombed. He acknowledged it, and moved on with, Alone in the Dark. Supposedly he learned from his mistakes from House of the Dead when he made Alone in the Dark (though this isn't exactly the environment to be, oh I don't know, learning as you go...).
Well, the director, Uwe Bolls, will try again. With another game to movie, BloodRrayne. And after that movie, he has another in the works, Hunter: The Reckoning, and Far Cry. Betcha those are going to bomb too. I mean, being a HUGE fan of games, it does sort of tickles me that so many are being turned to movies. But if all these movies are directed by Uwe Bolls (while I like his enthusiasm), the genre of games to movies is going no where.
So far, the only successful games to movie, Mortal Kombat 1, Tomb Raider 1, and Resident Evil series. Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil were both directed by Paul Anderson which, while not a great director, at least has a better track record for this genre then Uwe Bolls at the moment. Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie. And I have to admit, the movie itself isn't bad. Still, if it wasn't for Angelina Jolie, it probably would've never went anywhere.
Some of the upcoming games to movies that I'm more excited about, Silent Hill, NOT directed by Uwe Bolls, and instead, is being worked on by the creator of the Silent Hill series (as well as a number of big names in the movie industry. Well, people who actually had a successful run of movies as opposed to...well, again, Uwe Bolls)! And...well, that's about it. Well, okay, Resident Evil 3 since, like I said, while the games to movie genre has been filled with stinkers, at least Paul Anderson has made a semi-enjoyable one in the genre. Maybe Spyhunter if they make that as a fun action movie. There are even rumors of a Metal Gear Solid movie written by David Hayter (voice of Solid Snake, AND writer of such films like X-Men and X-Men 2) and given his track record, well, at least the stories are good. But still, these are only rumors. While it is cool seeing all these games to movies, the outlook for the genre does looks pretty bleak at the moment.
And speaking of upcoming game to movie stinkers, Doom the movie. It doesn't even SOUND like Doom. No Mars, no demons from Hell, just, well, zombies infected by a virus. Which oddly enough, sounds like...RESIDENT EVIL! If you are going to make a Doom movie, make it a DOOM movie!

Microsoft [!?] Develops Halo Film
Microsoft hired screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later) to script a feature-film version of its best-selling video-game franchise Halo, to be presented as a complete package, Variety reported.
This strategy is the handiwork of ex-Columbia Pictures president Peter Schlessel, who quit the studio to become a producer just over a two years ago. He is expected to serve as a producer in some capacity on the Halo film, the trade paper reported.
The Halo franchise is one of the most popular in video-game history, having sold more than 12.8 million units and grossed approximately $600 million since its 2001 debut. Last year, Halo 2 sold 6.4 million copies and was the second-best-selling video game of the year.
The plot of Halo centers on a warrior soldier known only as "Master Chief" who battles a group of alien religious zealots who believe one of their most sacred artifacts is located on Earth.

Pretty cool! Hopefully, Uwe Bolls stays far away from this movie! ;-)
