Can anyone help me? I have a computer here (My brothers actually) that constantly turns on and off by itself. Sometimes it doesn't even let you boot up until the 4th or 5th self-rebooting....it tries and then starts over and over again.
I remember not too long ago a virus did this and was hoping someone in here could tell me what virus did that....and how I can fix it? It won't let you get online either.....
No...he did not have a firewall and let Norton expire......I yelled at him already.... :)

It looks to me as though someones' computer isn't protected very well (if at all).
Does the system have full-time antivirus protection? You may want to try AVG or AntiVir. Both are free (I use AntiVir).
I also recommend using Spybots' "TeaTimer"; it protects against adware & spyware, a number of trojans, as well as un-authorized changes to your registry.
Javacool Softwares' "SpywareGuard" is a full-time protection program which uses heuristics to protect your system. Their "SpywareBlaster" program makes changes to your system which can protect it against spyware/malware. Many people use TeaTimer, SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster together, to protect their systems.
If you check my FR homepage, you'll find it's full of security-related links to software (freeware), sites, etc., including links to everything I've mentioned here.

NOOOOO!! Do not tell a non-technical person to go into the BIOS. No, no, no! It's only half as dangerous as all these people telling a non-technical person to reformat the drive... or dink around in the registry... Or loading them up on links to more crap to install....
With the help of a few FReepers, we can turn any computer into a boat anchor ;~D

It sounds like what it says, it needs which isn't on your computer.
However, it's hard to even hazard a guess without more information.
What OS are you using?
What *exactly* does the error message say?

Hey
Go to microsofts website and get their free MS AntiSpyware program. Install it and run it's self-updating feature.
I just got done working on someones PC and I ran AdAware, SpyBot, CWShredder, HiJack This, AntiTrojan A2, and a few others and I still knew a trojan was somewhere; I found it using MS's antispyware program as last resort; it picked up a trojan - I think it was called sysgarbage.ocx
Give it a try. Make sure if you are running XP to disable the System Restore feature first.

Yep. WHat happened was that apparenlty Service PAck 2 was installed halfway and then stopped. SO, I deleted the SP2 and was able to install the program.....HOWEVER...when I uninstalled SP2, it wiped out all the hardware settings and didn't find the modem drivers on startup. So I can't get on line.....I hope to God my brother has the drivers at home so I can install them...then everything should be fine from here on with THAT computer. Thanks for all your help....

You know, more people have had trouble with that when SP2 gets interrupted. Usually it doesn't cause problems but you are about the 3rd person I have known it happen to.
You might check MS's tech support online and see if there is a question/answer on deleting downloaded updates. I know there is ONE file to not delete, and it is the history of updates.
If you can't get it fixed, you can (assuming you are using XP) pop in the XP CD and go to system restore. If you don't have that installed on your PC already, you can type some commands at the command prompt to copy "repair" files and it will restore it to the last working boot-up, even if the option to use "Last Known Good Configuration" (hitting F8 key while booting) doesn't work. let me know if I can help...

Hi...I put the disk in for the driver and started to load it....and it almost completed....but then it brought up an error stating it was corrupted. So, I went into the modem setup area and started poking around and pressed something called "QUERY THe MODEM". Well...information popped in there and I figured that was a 'good thing'. So I tried the install again and it WORKED! Query the modem! Query the modem! lol! I learned alot through this little virus corrupted computer. Will be glad to give it back to my brother who will be happy that he won't have to buy a new computer.....
Thanks for all your help!
