Stone blames 'fundamentalism' in US for 'Alexander' flop

LONDON (AFP) - Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone blamed "raging fundamentalism in morality" for the frosty reception that his new film "Alexander" is getting in his native United States.

In London for its British premiere, Stone, 58, said that after a career full of cage-rattling work, he thought a biopic of Alexander the Great, the 4th century Macedonian-born conquerer, would be "a safe subject".

But he said he was "quite taken aback by the controversy and fierceness of the reviews" which greeted its US release, including outrage at the film's suggestion that Alexander was bisexual.

"Sexuality is a large issue in America right now, but it isn't so much in other countries," he said.

"There's a raging fundamentalism in morality in the United States. From day one audiences didn't show up. They didn't even read the reviews in the south because the media was using the words: 'Alex is Gay'."

"Alexander" stars Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie, both seen at the London premiere, but its US box office take so far has been less than a quarter of the 150 million dollars that it cost to make.

Dear Ollie: Boo. Hoo.

Maybe these moviemakers should take a hint from say, Pixar studios, who seem to crank out hit after G-rated hit ("The Incredibles" excepted, of course).

The movie "sucked". We don't want this decadent crap for movies. Pitt is a sex object and this movie was porno for perverts and desperate wives.

The Greek lawyers saw the movie first. They ultimatly rejected the idea of a suit based on the EU cultural laws. They found the movie was so poorly made that any bad publicity would help the movie. They were laughing at stone.

Typical liberal behavior. He made a good movie and is a victim (in Dem -speak). He had not hand in the abject fasilure of his hideous movie.

No kidding, I won't go see it because I have no interest in homosexual film portrayals. I'm heterosexual, why would I have an interest in it?

I guess there aren't enough gay people who will pay to see it. Or maybe it's boring to them, too. Who know? Who cares?

but wait for the DVD sales. Will there be a warning label with an H for hot homosexual content? Will children 17 and under be allowed to buy this homosexual flick?

Obviously, he just didn't express his message in a way that the average voter, uh, movie goer would understand.

Roger Ebert is as liberal as any columnist out there, and he rated it his worst movie of the year. He being the dean of film critics, Ebert has got to be a much larger (no pun intended...well, ok, maybe a little...) reason why few people bothered to see the movie than so called "fundamentalism".

Okay. As long as we understand each other.

This stupid SOB Stone took one of history's most fascinating figures and turned him into a boring fairy.

Unforgivable.

The money quote: "Alexander" . . .US box office take so far has been less than a quarter of the 150 million dollars that it cost to make.

After a few more self-indulgent flops, no one in Hollywood will return Oliver's calls.
