From a little dust-up within YOU ARE HERE TO FIGHT
To: Askel5Perhaps its true that all men love to fight sometimes. Tonight may be my night.
I have always had a cynical regard for these pep talks of Patton. Dont be unmindful of the zeitgeist, Askel; the exaltation of the common man (of whom so much social cooperation was required in the 30s, and so much military obediance in the 40s) was not accomplished without a grotesque degree of pandering by the mighty to the tastes and supposed styles of the lowly. George VI may have been enough of a simpleton to have been speaking truthfully when he declared that You are my Sunshine was his favorite song, but he was not enough of a vulgarian to have known the song even existed, except that someone thought it politic to call it to the royal attention.
For a good many Crispins days, a certain blustering bravado has been useful in encouraging men about to go in harms way, but in these piping times of peace, we may consider matters more thoughtfully, even as General Sherman did:
War is at its best barbarism. . . .I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have never fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell. -- speech to the Michigan Military Academy, 1879
As for Pattons professed conviction that all Americans despise a loser, all I can say is that George Patton failed to get the full benefit of his year spent as a member of the cadet corps at Virginia Military Institute. He would have done well to have strolled down Letcher Avenue one Sunday afternoon, for a visit to Lee Chapel, where he could have pondered the words of a better man, and a better soldier -- loser and all -- who I assure you will always be loved and admired more than Patton:
Headquarters Army Nothern Virginia
Appomattox C.H. April 10. 1865
General Orders No. 9After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources.
I need not tell the survivors of so many hard-fought battles who have remained steadfast to the last that I have consented to this result from no distrust of them; but feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuance of the contest, I determined to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past services have endeared them to their countrymen. By the terms of the agreement, officers and men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged.
You may take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you his blessing and protection.
With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration of myself,
I bid you all an affectionate farewell.
ROBERT E. LEE
Well then, we're related.
*hoping my new "cousin" is rich rich rich*
How odd; I was thinking of that thread just the other day. Very sporting of you to quote me.
Yes, Lee made a statement with his actions that Sunday.
I would suggest Jay Winnick's "April 1865" for some insights into Lee's thinking toward the end of the War. Ultimately it was Lee that opted to avoid the extension of the War into a bloody guerilla-phase.
He was also President of what became Washington & Lee College. Pity he died in 1870 -- just 5 short years after the war's conclusion.
Here in my neck of the woods, we don't know much about Robert E. Lee......but I can tell ya everything ya always wanted to know about John D. Lee, or Brig Young for that matter.
Card catalogs are no longer part of a library's resources.
EggsLeeAckley??? That's funny right there.
You know the rule! Pictures, darn it! PICTURES!
He'll obviously need one of us to type it up for him, as well. Otherwise, it'll look like: "robert e lee this rport is about smone whose important during the civill war and...."
Hey, CD...doncha just luv propur grammer 'n stuff?
Happy Friday!
I thought she looked old and ill.
LOL - Happy Friday!
Then someone in makeup has more than earned an Academy Award nomination...
Another quote from R.E. Lee:
One must always assume responsibility for one's own work. To rely on the charity of others shows a distinct lack of responsibility. It is to be hoped that one's teacher would issue a "smackdown" to any such person.
I agree on Bob Duvall's acting and hope he could portray Gen. Lee well - He is a direct descendant (on his mother's side IIRC).
Eggs Lee Ackley?
Very cheesy, marty.
Be sure to add the ARLINGTON story to your report......
Do the report on Lee's envolvement in the Mexican War. Should be enough for one page. For starters check out Jeff Shaara's Gone For Soldiers.
