Laugh machine used during debates?
My hears | Me

Posted on 10/13/2004 8:20:22 PM PDT by Avenger

Did you guys notice anything strange during this (the last debate)? President Bush made several funny comments to which the audience responded to with warm laughter. A few moments later Kerry responded to the moderator's question (about strong women in their lives). Anyway, Kerry told a lame joke and stood there waiting for the response from the audience...there was none. Several seconds passed by then the moderator laughed. This was then followed by nearly uproarous laughter. Why the delay? Was this real laughter from the audience or from a laugh machine? After this I noticed that everytime Kerry told a joke (no matter how lame) the moderator would giggle, then I would hear audience laughter. What is up with that? It did seem a little strange.

I noticed the moderator was the only one laughing as well. However, John Kerry's admittance to being a Gold Digger was pretty funny. It wasn't a laugh machine; it was a natural response.

I don't remember any laughter for Kerry.
Perhaps you heard people laughing nervously at his discomfort.
Or perhaps you heard the sounds of SchadenFreunde.

The moderator was faking his laugh. The audience laughed at Bob's stupid giggling. That's why the delay.

What I noticed was Scheifer's bizarre giggling jag. He truly embarrassed himself.

Your honest thoughts- are Kerry and the dems honestly trying to win this race? Did they really think that a Massachusetts liberal who makes Ted Kennedy look mainstream could beat Bush? After how badly pappy Bush whomped the liberal Massachusetts Governor in 1988?

Could Dubya truly perform as badly as he did in debate #1 and as dominantly as he did in debate#3?

I agree. I think Shieffer's girly laugh was for embarassment. Kerry embarassed himself like the freshman dolt that he is. You could see the "discomfort" all over Terayza's face in the audience. The whole thing was too delicious--with the only one standing with grace, humor, and dignity: GW Bush (as Laura and his daughters just beamed with pride in the audience). It was like an old 1940's movie. Sighhhhhhhh.

IMO, every presidential debate (or candidate speech, for that matter) needs a laugh track.

Yeah, it is pretty unbelievable that the moderator was faking giggles so that Kerry didn't look like a complete idiot. I don't recall him laughing like at anything that President Bush said - not that he needed to because unlike Kerry, President Bush actually has a sense of humor.

Well, in 2000 AlGore provided the groan and sigh track.

My initial response was to be horrified for Kerry's wife... then I remembered the mindless things she has said... "Let them go naked..."

His comment is indeed the "naked" truth...

Bush's mike was turned down due to the feedback in the begining.

That is why the laughter sounded louder with Kerry.

After seeing debates #2 and #3, I gotta wonder what happen to W during debate #1. Let's be honest people, debate #1 was a real stinker - at least in terms of presentation and style. What happened? Enquiring minds want to know.

Arnold would say - "Don't be a girly man!" to Bob S.

I think that might have been the Whine-O-Matic, by Acme Industries.

I think at first everyone was shocked at his answer, then the forced laugh because it was such an uncomfortable silence and I think Dubya might have made a comment or face (like..."Uh oh")

I think the audience was shocked that he admitted he'd "married up" -- out of his league, as it were -- and were waiting to see if Tereza thought that was a joke -- it's kind of like commenting on how successful your wife is at picking up sailors ... they did finally laugh because let's face it, that was funny. If you were not his wife.

Yes, Bob Schieffer did resemble Beavis laughing at Butthead.

I believe the audience was laughing nervously at the spectacle of a CBS newsman morphing into a jackass.

I noticed this also. After I had to endure the fake laughing by the moderator, I guess we were then treated to forced laugher by the dem section, lol.

What happened? Enquiring minds want to know.

Two days trudging through ruined orange groves talking to farmers who lost everything, hugging people who lost their homes and their livelyhood, handing out cases of water and MREs to Americans looking for hope, 35 Iraqi children being blown up that morning. That's what happened to the first debate.
