Is this a real "suitcase nuke" incident? Anybody ever heard of this?

News to me. If such a thing happened, it would be seared...SEARED...in my mind.

isn't it 600 tons of nuclear material that belongs to Russia. Are we buying it from them? Because last time I checked Russia was a sovereign nation.

Three possibilities:

1. He made it up

2. It's the truth & it's already been reported

3. It's the truth & Kerry revealed classified material

I don't know which.

My first thought was that it was one of those Red Mercury hoaxes that we heard about in the 90s.

That must be the nuclear facilities in Baghdad that we "left unguarded"

The New War : The Web of Crime That Threatens America's Security
by John Kerry

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
In a cursory overview of international crime, Senator Kerry (D-Mass.) implausibly calls for foreign criminal law to be imported into the United States to prosecute nationals of other countries who plan crimes here then conduct them abroad. His rationale is that weak or corrupt countries cannot effectively prosecute crimes committed within their jurisdictions. At the same time, he suggests that crimes committed against Americans abroad be prosecuted here in "special courts." He also calls for transnational asset forfeiture, in which victimized countries would share in the forfeiture of assets seized in cooperating jurisdictions. While well intentioned, the book is short on specifics and contains no revelations about international crime. For general audiences.?Harry Charles, Attorney at Law, St. Louis, Mo.

NOTE: In the reviews, absolutely zero mention of any specifics of apprehending nuclear suitcase.
I haven't read the book, but I have to believe if this is specifically written, it would be mentioned in one of these reviews.

More to follow

"[B]ack then, we intercepted a suitcase in a Middle Eastern country with nuclear materials in it, and the black market sale price was about $250 million. Now, there are terrorists trying to get their hands on that stuff today."

Did he just spill classified info, or was his debate briefing done by Robert Ludlum?

At that price, Kerry and TRRREEEZZZAAAAA could buy quite a few of those nasty things off the market!

Kerry got it from the movie "Sum of All Fears."

The man lives in Fantasyland.

He didn't even know that it was Carter who put the sanctions on Iran in 1979.

He blamd Bush.

Kerry is the Prince of Dorkness.

I wrote a book about it several years ago, maybe six or seven years ago, called, 'The New War,'

And I thought he was going to mention his other book, The New Soldier.

Here's an e-mail sent from Terry McAwfull, so let's all help him out!!!

Tonight, don't let George Bush's henchmen steal another victory. We need your online help immediately after the debate, so save this email, print it out, and have it ready with you as you watch the first Presidential debate tonight.

We all know what happened in 2000. Al Gore won the first debate on the issues, but Republicans stole the post-debate spin. We are not going to let that happen again, and you will play a big role.

Immediately after the debate, we need you to do three things: vote in online polls, write a letter to the editor, and call in to talk radio programs. Your 10 minutes of activism following the debate can make the difference.

Vote
National and local news organizations will be conducting online polls during and after the debate asking for readers' opinions. Look for online polls at these national news websites, and make sure to vote in every one of them:

ABC News: http://www.abcnews.com/
CBS News: http://www.cbsnews.com/
CNN: http://www.cnn.com/
Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/
MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.com/
USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/
And be sure to check the websites of your local newspapers and TV stations for online polls. It is crucial that you do this in the minutes immediately following the debate.

See link on: The 1990s: Case studies of clandestine acquisition of materials for Weapons of Mass Destruction

http://www.ci-ce-ct.com/Feature%20articles/06-10-2002.asp

NO MENTION OF NUCLEAR SUITCASE BEING APPREHENDED! ONLY COMPONENTS OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS.

Interesting paragraph from site:
Given the long-standing friendship and special relations between Russia and Iraq, the long-standing operational relationship between the Russian intelligence services (the GRU in particular) and Iraqi intelligence services and the personality of Sadam Hussein, the nuclear suitcase bomb would be Iraq’s - and Al Qaida’s - most valuable terrorist weapon – terrorism which could not be traced or predicted - terrorism without a return address.

Someone more knowledgeable about suitcase nukes, please correct me if necessary.... but doesn't the phrase "suitcase nukes" refer to their approximate size -- and NOT that they're kept in actual suitcases? Thanks.
