I seem to have adopted a stray kitten as an indoor cat. I've never had a cat in my life! (I do have a Jack Russell Terrier.) What do I do now?!
This is gonna get interesting....
Love the little guy. Cats are amazing animals and wonderful companions. I lost mine this week after 16 years. I really miss her.
Let the fun begin!
Love it, and it will never leave you.
First, what does your doggy think of it?
How is the Jack Russell getting along with the kitty?
Feed it to the Jack Russell's.
Find a new home for the kitten, The Jack Russell will kill it. Jack Russells view cats as vermin. They go for the gut to kill. There is no repairng that kind of damage.
And they are cunning and patient. I've known Jack Russells who waited 8 years to kill the family cat.
Trust me on this.
Get a litter box and box train it ASAP. :-) Might want to have it spayed/neutered too. How is the Jack Russell towards it? How old do you think that the kitten is?
get litter box
buy good kitty food - science diet or iams (not grocery store brand)
First, get a sizal(sp?) scratching post for the cat, or a piece of cat furniture. 'Sizal' is the rope material wrapped around a pole or board and cats will scratch that over anything else. Get a litter box, Fresh Step clumping cat litter is the best, IMHO. Also, get some cheap catnip toys. Last, get a slicker brush, and get the cat used to being groomed while it is still young, to avoid fighting it to groom it later. Once the hotter seasons hit, it helps to groom the cat once a week. If it is a long haired cat, buy hairball remedy. Clean water is a must to avoid urinary tract problems in the future. And dont get cheap cat food, which is the primary cause of said urinary tract problems. Ill think of more later...JFK
Keep the kitten, toss the terrier.
Introduce the kitty to your dog slowly and give extra love to your dog. Afterward, love and enjoy both. Have a vet check the kitty for ear mites, worms and general health. After they establish the pecking order in the house, everything will be fine.
A vet visit as soon as possible is also a good idea. Take the kitten with you. The vet can make sure that the kitten doesn't have any pre-existing nasties and give you lots of hints on the care and feeding of your new beast.
Other than that, you're on your own. Be prepared for some of the finest home entertainment you've ever experienced.
Think about adopting another one. Two or three aren't really much more trouble (fun) than one. Mine are really well behaved.
Loks like the "Vanity" thing just went over the top. Looks for new guidelines soon.
1.Litre Box
2.Iams food, or Science diet.
That's it.
I have an Akita that is still thinking about how to catch the cats. Only problem is that she is old and can't catch them anymore.
Scratching post!
Get to vet right away. Cat will get shots and set up appointment to have kitty fixed. Then..........put away all glass valuables, kitty will knock over everything. You may want to keep kitty in bathroom with door closed during the day when you are not home. Kitty will be litter box trained in no time, just stick kitty in litter box and he will get the hint. HEHEHEHE have fun oh and kitty has adopted you. Kitty is your BOSS now!
