No decent public transportation. Stinking high taxes of all sorts, especially property taxes. High cost of living. Exorbitant utility rates. Government gives monopolies to certain companies (Cablevision, Lilco, etc), thereby preventing competition and lower prices. Need a car to go everywhere and anywhere (which is not a bad thing in itself, a car is quite convenient, but the costs of gas, insurance and occasional repairs are killing me).
Bank account is always empty, and the costs of living here prevent me from getting ahead, saving some money, and replensishing my account. Just when I think I have managed to save a few dollars, along comes another expense that empties it out. Car breaks down, car insurance is due, utility bills are due, etc.
It's not easy being poor in many other states, but in Long Island it's much worse in comparison. It's easier to be poor in say North Carolina than it is here.
All defenders of Long Island, I dont want to hear it: "But, but but Long Island has nice beaches, and and and lots of things to do! Nightclubs, shopping malls, parks, the Hamptons, etc." Blow it out your (expletive deleted), LI defenders. I don't want to hear it. Face it, it SUCKS here and it's getting worse, as if that were still possible.
I can't wait to escape from this fiscal hellhole (I got 5-10 years more on my "sentence" before I can move). If Long Island were a person instead of a geographical location, I'd like to bitchslap it for being the bloodsucking parasite that it is.

Why?
Why do people love Florida (bugs, humidity, swamps)
Why do people love Las Vegas (Sin City, No beaches, A desert)
To each his/her own. I like Long Island because of the beautiful beaches, it's close enough to the bright lights and fun nights in NYC - yet far enough away from it for peace and solitude.
Awesome seafood - cool places to hang out - I just like it.
And besides, my friends and family are all here. My folks live less than 15 minutes away, my sister lives less than 10 minutes away. Most of my friends are here...
Long Island is cool :)
Although we're not the worst teams this year. :D
Honestly, I'd slit my own throat if I had to live there again.
Not unless they changed their name to the Bengals! :D
Whoa!
How long were you in FLA?
I saw you and that Fdumb guy go at it one nite -- is this a FLA version of the same in the works?
Well that's how I feel about the Florida swamp-land.
I lived there for almost a year. What a pleasure it was waiting on line 40 minutes at a 7-11 just to get a pack of cigarettes.
When they say it's s-l-o-w down there. They mean it.
Fiona, you have to read this thread.
IMMEDIATELY!!!
I've never been there, but one or two of the most objectionable people I've ever had the misfortune to meet are from Long Island.
Thankyou for the very best laugh I have had all day. (And it's 5pm here on the east coast of Australia...)
Cheers,
KaJac.
P.S. Whatever you do, DON'T move to Connecticut. It's even worse.
F**kin' O'Malley! Da bum!
Even I know the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn before '59... (I WAS married to a Yankees fan from CT, though, maybe I picked up more about baseball from him than I thought...)
Why, thankyou, Gerard, for the ping to such an entertaining thread.
I only lived in CT about a year, and went to NYC precisely ONCE (saw Times Square a few streets of the theatre district but that was about it - we went to see Neil Finn play at NYC's Town Hall venue, in January 2003, but all I remember apart from the concert and the streets was the COLD!) and never once set foot on Long Island.
However, I have met some Long Islanders online, and while some are nice, some just start out that way and go positively NUTS at you at sometime or another, and hate you forevermore. Perhaps it's just me, but I found that with people from Connecitcut as well... including my husband :-S
The Liberals of course, will have moved to infest other states (New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine) with their failed ideas. Maybe they will buy beach front property in Saudi Arabia and build a Miami on the Arabian Sea. Condo commies and all.
I'm not leaving right now. Even where I live, I know the politicians are spending money like water. For all what was said about Gulotta, this guy is WORSE. I started doing some serious investigation after a bit of a self pity party in a FR thread about politics where I live. The politics is rotten to the core, and when you go to some political meetings you find out that people really don't care except for themselves.
You said it.
But then... you technically live on Long Island, don't you? So I guess you're entitled to say anything you like about the place.
I will say I met far happier people in the western states. The people in the east coast states would stare at you like something nasty on the sidewalk if you so much as said "Have a Nice Day"... this happened to me in MA, CT, NY, PA... whereas the people in the flyover states, particularly New Mexico and so forth, seemed to have time to smile back, recognise my accent and ask me what I thought of America.
I thought a lot about America - good and bad. But the good basically outweighs the bad. A bit like my own country, writ large (well, mainland Australia is roughly the same size as mainland USA... thing is, hardly anyone lives here except on or near the coasts, which explains why we have 20 million people and America is pushing 300 million.)
No one should have to live east of Interstate 5.
But isn't all that land set to fall into the sea, once the next big earthquake hits? (She who lived 10 miles west of I-95 for a year, and studied tectonic plate theory at school, wonders...)
Yes, but that's why we sleep in bathtubs. We're gonna begin paddling southwest. ;-)
