No decent public transportation. Stinking high taxes of all sorts, especially property taxes. High cost of living. Exorbitant utility rates. Government gives monopolies to certain companies (Cablevision, Lilco, etc), thereby preventing competition and lower prices. Need a car to go everywhere and anywhere (which is not a bad thing in itself, a car is quite convenient, but the costs of gas, insurance and occasional repairs are killing me).
Bank account is always empty, and the costs of living here prevent me from getting ahead, saving some money, and replensishing my account. Just when I think I have managed to save a few dollars, along comes another expense that empties it out. Car breaks down, car insurance is due, utility bills are due, etc.
It's not easy being poor in many other states, but in Long Island it's much worse in comparison. It's easier to be poor in say North Carolina than it is here.
All defenders of Long Island, I dont want to hear it: "But, but but Long Island has nice beaches, and and and lots of things to do! Nightclubs, shopping malls, parks, the Hamptons, etc." Blow it out your (expletive deleted), LI defenders. I don't want to hear it. Face it, it SUCKS here and it's getting worse, as if that were still possible.
I can't wait to escape from this fiscal hellhole (I got 5-10 years more on my "sentence" before I can move). If Long Island were a person instead of a geographical location, I'd like to bitchslap it for being the bloodsucking parasite that it is.

I like where I live, highest property taxes in the country notwithstanding.
I could have sworn you were talking about New Jersey!
For that matter Westchester, Rockland, North Jersey and NYC all suck.
Here's a thought. Contact someone in the Kerry campaign and tell them you have some dirt on Bush. Demand payment in advance. After collecting your money and having it safely deposited in an offshore account, have a convenient memory lapse, a la RAT. After all, they never bother to check their facts. For that matter, they don't even care about facts. Be creative. Then collect your money in traveler's checks and get the heck out of there.
However, I wouldn't trade my wonderful childhood in Malverne for all the world. For all of its faults, LI (at least the real "towns" in Nassau and the North Shore) is still superior to the endless Wal Marts, Applebees and gated communities that dominate the faceless and souless "sunbelt."
LI was great until I was 12. Then I started sneaking off to the City as much as possible.
BTW: Interesting this thread came up today, as I went out on a date with a girl from "Matzoh Pizza" (Massepequa for all you hicks from Suffolk County) last night.
At age 5, I woke up with a knife at my throat there.
I later moved, take the hint!
Billy, I made a BIG MISTAKE moving away from New York (Brooklyn) for the THIRD TIME three months ago. I can't WAIT to get back. NYC may force the middle (and even Upper Middle) class to live like paupers, but there's no place like it on earth.
Wow how the heck did you meet a girl from Massapequa all the way in Seattle?
Let me guess, you just moved to Levittown...
A: The internet. Where my social life in now centered since people in this 'burg are so damn cold...
NYC and the entire northeast isn't a bed of roses either.
Think they'll accept some forged documents? I can whip those up with my photoshop.
***evil grin***

What do you mean (paying off/pay down your mortgage)?
Ping and duck!!
(feets don't fail me now)
That and building a little nest egg, if I can, so that I can get a fresh new start elsewhere.
WHY???
