ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has abandoned all pretense of neutrality in this week's vote for the next winner of Fox television's "American Idol." He is mobilizing his forces to put Georgia's favorite daughter, Diana DeGarmo, over the top.
With the 16-year-old sweetheart from Snellville, Ga., as one of the two finalists on the show, Perdue is pulling out all the stops.
He signed a proclamation Monday declaring Tuesday -- the day of the big face-off -- as "Dial for Diana DeGarmo Day." The statement calls on all Georgians to show support for Diana by watching the call-in show that evening and casting a vote for her by telephone.
Some members of DeGarmo's family will be watching Tuesday's live episode from the governor's mansion with about 200 friends and neighbors, said Dan McLagan, the governor's spokesman.
The winner won't be announced until Wednesday night, after all the votes have been tallied. Perdue, the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction, has been known to be fiercely partisan at times, and the prospect of a Georgia winner seemed to get his competitive instincts going.
"I've been advised time and time again to stay out of contested races, but this time it is personal," he said in a press release. "I think history will judge me as a man who was neutral in American Idol competitions when decorum called for it, but now the rubber is hitting the road. I am standing by Diana DeGarmo."
The governor's "Dial for Diana" proclamation was accompanied by detailed instructions on how viewers can vote for the Shiloh High School junior, the youngest girl in a competition that began with auditions that involved 70,000 people. Link
