EASTER STORY COOKIES

To be made the evening before Easter.

You need: ? c. whole pecans 1 tsp. vinegar 3 egg whites pinch salt 1c. sugar zipper baggie wooden spoon tape Bible

Preheat oven to 300 (this is important-don't wait until you're half done with the recipe)

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10 -11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27.

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1c. sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Ps. 34:8 and John 3:16. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isa.1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb here Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt. 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27:65-66.

GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt. 28:1-9

Here's another:

"Resurrection Rolls"

Need: Crescent Rolls, Melted Butter, Large Marshmallows, Cinnamon, Sugar Preheat oven to 350*.

Give each child a triangle of crescent rolls. The crescent roll represents the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in.

Give each child a marshmallow. This represents Jesus.

Have him dip the marshmallow in melted butter, which represents the oils of embalming. Then dip the buttered marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar, which represents the spices used to anoint the body.

Then wrap up the coated marshmallow tightly in the crescent roll (not like a typical crescent roll up... but bring the sides up and seal the marshmallow inside. This represents the wrapping of Jesus' body after death.

Place in a 350* oven for 10-12 minutes (the oven represents the tomb-pretend like it was three days!).

When the rolls have cooled slightly, the children can open their rolls (cloth) and discover that Jesus is no longer there, HE IS RISEN!

(The marshmallow melts and the crescent roll is puffed up, but empty).

Hi FReepers! Got kids? Got Spring Break?

Or maybe you homeschool or teach a Sunday school class.

Here are two easy recipes to share with the kids, and for those who are Christians, there's a bible lesson for each!

Enjoy!

Cookie Freeper Ping? Wow - I've died and went to Heaven. My kitchen takes hours to recover from cookie making. I had a baking disaster over the weekend when I attempted to make 3 loves of bamanna bread - I don't know what happen to them - it is still a mystery, I know I put all the ingredients in - but they were not fit for human consumption - this doesn't happen often in my kitchen, just maybe twice a year, but it always makes me afraid to bake for awhile. The chickens liked the banana bread though.

Hmmmm. that Is a mystery!

I just looked and it DOES say "?" in the copy my friend sent me. Can't tell if that is her editing, or a typo!

Pecans are pretty heavy, and this isn't a HUGE recipe. ANd it's a mereingue cookie.

If *I* were doing it, i'd try 1/4 cup whole pecans, which is plenty.

Wow! Powerful cookie recipe!

When I saw the ping, I thought, "Why am I being pinged to a cookie recipe? I don't make cookies!!"
I understand, and I appreciate it.
Saved for the future.......

My wife is Greek. Well, her family is. Greeks do Easter dinner right.

Lamb is usually the dish of the day. Roasted lamb, marinated lamb brains (a whole lot better than it sounds, and they tend to eat a lot of innards, but they are delicious), kourabiedes, baklava… ouzo, retsina…

They always have loaves of bread (Easter bread) that are sort of braided and have (whole) red eggs cooked in them… I still don’t know the significance of that.

… but it’s quite a party if you ever get the chance to attend something like that. Delicious everything and lots of it.

Ah. Probably she typed the three characters '1' '/' '4' and some helpful software changed that to the single character "1/4" which didn't get rendered in transfer to ASCII. Thanks!

Do you have a recipe for Scripture Cake? It's a fairly simply fruit and spice cake. Idea is, the recipe is written with Bible verses. If you want to find out how to make this cake, you need to have your Bible handy!

Lemme see if I can find one.....BRB

5 Luke 11:12
3 c. Leviticus 24:5
3/4 tsp. 2 Kings 2:20
3 tsp. Amos 4:5
1 tsp. Exodus 30:23
1/4 tsp. each: 2 Chronicles 9:9

1/2 c. Genesis 43:11 (last part of the verse only)
1/2 c. Jeremiah 24:5

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Thoroughly cream butter, brown sugar and eggs; combine dry ingredients and add alternately to creamed mixture with milk. Stir in nuts and fruit. Bake in two oiled cake pans for 30 to 40 minutes.

This is a real cake.

We have a bakery outlet close by and they have beauuuutiful $4 strudels (all different fruits) that are still sooo good and fresh - for the low low price of $1 each if you by 12 at a time. I love going there and I'm so glad I have a large freezer.
