The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Oh, I'll try to take pics. Might be too busy talking to faculty and such.
Sigh... I ought to get to bed. I want to get up early tomorrow and do weight-lifting. Maybe I'm going nuts, but I really want to build muscle, and the only way I'll get two lifts in this week is if I get up early tomorrow and Thursday...

Evening SuziQ - been interspersing some Cadfael mysteries amongst the other books, finished Summer of the Danes and now reading Penance of Cadfael. Had to toss in a couple of Patrick O'Briens along the way. Since Master and Commander, there seems be fewer copies of O'Briens work on the library shelves. Gave up any hope of reading them in order. sigh

Rosie, you are taking care of the cat by taking her to the vet, you're doing your part, all our pets are special to us, they depend on us to take the best care we can of them, chemo for pets is a tough row to hoe for them and the owner, only you can decide what do when the time comes to do it. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your kitty.
To: RosieCotton
I think I'd better not do any more searching. Will pray about it.

To: Wneighbor
He'd been in a nursing home in White Settlement for some time. I understand he'll likely be laid to rest in Hubbard.

There is still a place in Texas called White Settlement?

Was he from our area? No, actually, it was my grandma, his wife who was from your neck of the woods. That said, many years ago, he purchased plots for him and grandma in the cemetery in Hubbard. Grandma was buried there December a year ago. He will be in good company as most of my grandma's family is also buried there. Heck, I think I am related to the entire population of Hubbard, and Mt Calm for that matter (prolly half of Waco too, now that I think about it).
After lunch, elf-boy and I headed over to White Settlement to get grandpa's things. That took much of the day. I meant to call everyone tonight, but I really don't have any information to give other than he has passed. No funeral plans have been made, and NONE of the children (my mother and her siblings) even know yet. They left on a cruise to Cancuun this past Saturday! Mom has all the funeral arrangements prepaid, but I have no idea where to even begin to look for the information. Hmm. I really hope she calls home so we can tell her. Otherwise, we, my brother and I, have no way to get in touch with her. < /vent>

Well, that is distressing to not be able to let everyone know.
To: HairOfTheDog
Umm, yes. And it has everything to do with the line of demarcation... Where the West begins. The Indians at that time had been pushed west far enough that a settlement was feasible outside the fort. The town was the first settlement in that area outside the Fort... The fort being Fort Worth. The reason it was called *white* was because there were no Indians living there (much less anyone who was black or Mexican/Hispanic). Now, of course, it is mostly people who work at Lockheed-Martin... (and Mexicans).

I'm sorry to hear that this all happened while your mom is out of town and that you're having to deal with all this. I know it's tough. Good thing to know it is pre-planned though. I'll be praying for you, your mom and family. You know you're in the Hobbit Hole hearts now.

There is still a place in Texas called White Settlement? Yeah, there is, it's right up there with Ft. Worth and Dallas.
The White family settled there. :-)

Makes sense in historical terms.... I guess it is odd we don't have more 'white outpost' type names around here, deep in Indian country. Just surprises me that they haven't changed the name over time.
