The Hobbit Hole VI - And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
And Whither Then? I Cannot Say...
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I can't be sure but I think if Lady had called the coyotes in she'd have snapped a few necks. She didn't seem to like hearing them in "her" territory.

Things would get interestin' in my house though when I had a female wolf and she heard them. She slept with me and she'd hear the coyotes far off when I was asleep and suddenly, I would be immediately awakened by her responding voice! Loud! No alarm clock could compare!I haven't heard them yet, but people down the road a few miles have reported hearing wolves howl. Two have been shot in the area recently--didn't have many reports of them before this, they seem to be multiplying since some were set loose a number of years ago.
BTW, how'd you get the female wolf? I had a teacher in high school who had a male one with the permission of the DNR, which I think he said he'd rescued from a trap and nursed back to health or something like that. He said it acted friendly with him but wild towards anyone else.

Well, I wouldn't put my suburb-soft dogs up against a coyote, they're small, but they fight for a living. And it was especially bad for Zulu. We put her in the truck till long after it had quieted down again.

I've had 2 wolves. A long time ago - a male and then the female. I bred 'em... they were hybrids actually. The male I had was 3/4 wolf, 1/4 shepherd. The female was 7/8 wolf 1/8 shepherd. I got the first from a friend who thought I needed protection because 2 murdered bodies were found in my neighborhood in Austin within 3 weeks. The female I was given to me by a couple who didn't know what she was when they got her and were in terrible fear of her when they discovered she was wolf.
Mine were well behaved - but because they got an incredible amount of attention and thought they were "one of us." Nothing would have *ever* happened to either of my kids while I had them. And it would have been interesting to see someone who'd tried anything. But, they are very territorial and know who "their" pack is. Outsiders are not easily welcomed. It was interesting to date when I had wolves. They didn't typically like anyone coming to pick me up! :-)

You are right. Coyotes are wild and fierce fighters.

Yer gettin' to be a regular cowhand. A little Emerson, Lake and Palmer might get you out of that mood.

Coyotes are nothing to mess with...they're wily smart like only wild animals can be. Fortunately, they're so smart they shy away from larger dogs...even those they could easily deal with.

I got the first from a friend who thought I needed protectionThat's some protection, alright! :) Pretty cool. BTW raising wolves isn't something just anybody can do, I imagine--do you have a background handling wild animals that you felt comfortable taking them on?

Weren't you camping with us at Capital forest when Zulu was answering the coyotes and we realized she was calling them right to us? Yes I do!! that's what I mean when I say that coyotes are all cute and stuff until there's dozens of them all howling around your campsite... then it becomes quite creepy. One at a time is nothing. But dozens of the little ba$tard$... suddenly it's a whole new story...

No. No background. Both were "domesticated" when I got 'em. I mean, they can all become wild again, but these were raised in homes.
Actually Scott may find this odd, but of the breeds of dogs I've had I found my dalmation to be most like the wolf in temperament and attention requirements. Both the dals and the wolves required amazing amounts of love, devotion and attention. And they gave back more just as much or more than they got. Both were hyper critters and needed to be given lots of running. I think partially I was able to bond with them so well because I was single when I had them. Had their been a significant other in my life - I don't think I could have handled the wolves. They are very pack oriented and will adopt the family as a pack but only want one adult to be alpha to them.

Well, I am tired from fencing too, and our connection is real iffy again tonight. Won't stay up.
... hmmmm...
Hey Ramius, Hunt for Red October just started. Spike TV, if you get that.

but unfortunately most of the ones I know now are the sort you've been encountering. They must be Democrats, like the one 2J encountered during the Voter Registration drive. They DO feel like since they've lived all this time WE owe it to them to cover all their needs.
