.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

I re-filled the hummingbird feeder. I've been keeping mine filled too. We still have hummingbirds coming around, but they don't seem to be the same ones that were here last summer. These are bigger and much more colorful....maybe a hardier type of bird that can withstand the cold.
I read that hummingbirds can withstand freezing temperatures because they go into a state of torpor - "The dormant, inactive state of a hibernating or estivating animal." I guess some people have been concerned about keeping the birds from migrating by filling their feeders into the winter, but they say that won't happen and that some varieties will stay year round in mild winter areas.
I enjoy the hummingbirds so much. One of my feeders is right outside my kitchen window. In the summer we had birds coming to the feeder every couple of minutes, now I see only a couple a day. Beautiful little creatures.

Thoughtful Praises
Read: Psalm 47
God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with understanding. Psalm 47:7
Bible In One Year: 1 Corinthians 1-4
I wonder what God thinks about the way we sing at church. I'm not talking about the quality of our voices, but the honesty of our words. If we're being truthful, the following rewritten hymn titles might more accurately express what's in our hearts as we sing:
"Just As I Am" is "Just As I Pretend To Be."
"O How I Love Jesus" becomes "O How I Like Jesus."
"I Surrender All" is actually "I Surrender Some."
"He's Everything To Me" means "He's Quite A Bit To Me."
Jesus said that we are to worship Him in truth (John 4:24). Singing sincerely and with understanding is a serious challenge (Psalm 47:7).
Let's take up the challenge by seeking God's help to make the original titles of these hymns true for us. In repentance and without pretense, let's turn to Him just as we are. In His forgiving presence, let's declare total love for Jesus by surrendering all to Him. As a result, Jesus truly will become everything to us. Then we will be able to sing honestly about Jesus Christ and our love for Him.
As we make melody in our hearts to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19), let's worship in spirit and in truth. Joanie Yoder
You are the chosen of the Lord
To sing His highest praise,
And through the melody of song
To show His wondrous ways. Anon.
To sing God's praise, keep your heart in tune with Him.

It's the immature and weak ones that hang around they say.My daughter has fed a hummingbird or two several winters in the Houston area, where it does freeze, even though the winters are mild. She worries like crazy about them!

Pains of Love
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)
And wilt thou have me fashion into speech
The love I bear thee, finding words enough,
And hold the torch out, while the winds are rough,
Between our faces, to cast light upon each?
I drop it at thy feet. I cannot teach
My hand to hold my spirit so far off
From myself.. me.. that I should bring thee proof,
In words of love hid in me... out of reach.
Nay, let the silence of my womanhood
Commend my woman-love to thy belief,
Seeing that I stand unwon (however wooed)
And rend the garment of my life in brief
By a most dauntless, voiceless fortitude,
Lest one touch of this heart convey its grief.

Here are three for you, hope these will make upfor being gone too long from a delightful poetry place!
Trike
#1.
Lover by Dawn
As dawn breaks soft through the windows above my bed,
I watch her sleep and lay silent in wonder at the art that is she.
Her skin is as soft as silk, yet filled with the heat of life and passion fed,
I caress her with gentle joy at the mystery that only she can be.
Her eyes are closed in deepest sleep, the peace of her fills me sweet,
and I am humbled by her grace in soft repose, a living canvas here.
I watch her mouth slip into little smiles so playful yet so fleet,
as dreams take her to places only she will ever know I fear.
She breaths with subtle rise and fall of those delicate perfect breasts,
and I marvel at the sheen of light upon the softest of golden downy hair.
Shadows play upon her skin in slow dance to mother sun as she rests,
glowing with perfection, living art of solar caresses upon skin oh so bare.
Tangled limbs in lazy grace that flow from her last passions race,
with wisps of sheet to add texture to perfection, she is Loves work in display.
Her hair a halo of color and golden luster to catch the eye and let time fly a pace,
no picture drawn by hand of man can express her beauty as morning does say.
#2.
Morning Contemplation
At the edge of morning,
I almost wake again,
enjoying the warmth that enfolds me like a second skin.
I notice the soft breaths of my lover,
snuggled in my arms, from our latest fling.
gentle reminders of her that remind me of other moments, and soon I am smiling.
I hold her tighter,
yet in softest embrace,
so as not to wake her in this perfect moment, in this perfect place.
These are the moments,
that I will treasure of my truest friend,
and the best of what I take into eternity, until we are together again.
#3.
Music of the City
A city has a beat, that gets into the feet,
moven everyone on, to its music from dusk to dawn.
Listen to the tune, and get the pulse soon,
dancen to the City, feel its life hot and gritty.
The bass beat is the sounds, of the trucks all around,
bringing in the stuff, sold good times or rough.
Entwining beats set the pace, giving life to this race,
solid throb of life, amid the clatter of daily strife.
The melodic flow, is the cars and crowds you know,
a million patterns all in tune, captivate you soon.
Carrying you along with the flow, adding steps as it goes,
making the dance, a living thing far from happenstance.
The lead is you, you know, the slapping of your feet as you go,
sets you rocking to the Citys beat, played by your willing feet.
Makes the song come alive, moving to the urban jive,
doing the boulevard boogie, as alive as you can be.

If you head for Palm Springs, may I tag along?
You're lucky you live in the city ... at 6:30 this morning, thermometer showed 21.9 degrees here.
Guess who went back to bed?

Good Morning, Mama_Bear.
Sorry that I missed you last night. I decided to read for awhile then fell asleep until 2:00.
I meant to get up and welcome everyone for Sunday morning; changed my mind because the house was starting to cool off. Heater goes off at 11:00.
Hope to see you sometime later today.
