.................................................................
The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.
FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.
I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

A gentle word like a spark of light,
Illuminates my soul
And as each sound goes deeper,
It's YOU that makes me whole
There is no corner, no dark place,
YOUR LOVE cannot fill
And if the world starts causing waves,
It's your devotion that makes them still
And yes you always speak to me,
In sweet honesty and truth
Your caring heart keeps out the rain,
YOUR LOVE, the ultimate roof
So thank you my Love for being there,
For supporting me, my life
I'll do the same for you, you know,
My Beautiful, Darling Wife.

Friends
A friend is someone we turn to when our spirits need a lift, A friend is someone we treasure for our friendship is a gift. A friend is someone who fills our lives with beauty, joy, and grace And makes the whole world we live in a better and happier place.

A chilly Good Morning, Russ. Tho the WeatherBug for Fresno says 40 degrees, my thermometer says 31 degrees. I live out in the boondocks away from the city heat.
Thank you for providing that steaming cup of coffee and the inspiration to start our day.

This is not like any September in Fresno! Looks like end of November to me.
November
How far away bright April seems
From this a drear November day.
The trees are gaunt, the grass is sere,
And birds and bees have flown away.
Without the tenants of the air
The darkening sky is bleak and still,
The cold gray tufts of drifting clouds,
Float dismally above the hill.
Barren and fruitless are the fields
Except for drooping shocks of corn,
Against the line of earth and sky
They stand like scarecrows all forlorn,
The twilight of the year has come,
The ghosts of winter stalk and wail,
How far away bright April seems
When dull November moods prevail.

Carroll Shelby's Chili
Makes: 4 Serving
Ingredients
1/2 lb Suet or 1/2 cup Oil,cooking
1 lb Beef round,coarse grind
1 lb Beef chuck,coarse grind
1 can Tomato sauce(8oz ea)
1 can Beer(12oz ea)
1/4 cup Red chile,hot,ground
2 Garlic cloves,finely chopped
1 Onion,small,finely chopped
1 1/4 tsp Oregano,dried,pref. Mexican
1/2 tsp Paprika
1 1/2 tsp Cumin,ground
1 1/4 tsp Salt
Cayenne pepper
3/4 lb Monterey Jack cheese,grated
Preparation:
1. Melt the suet or heat the oil in a heavy 3-quart (or larger) pot over medium-high heat. Remove the unrendered suet and add the meat to the pot. Break up any lumps with a fork and cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is evenly browned.
2. Add the tomato sauce, beer, ground chile, garlic, onion, oregano, paprika, 1 teaspoon of the cumin, and the salt. Stir to blend. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
3. Taste and adjust seasonings, adding the cayenne pepper. Simmer, uncovered, 1 hour longer.
4. Stir in the cheese and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of the cumin. Simmer 1/2 hour longer, stirring often to keep the cheese from burning.

Good morning! That is a foggy dreary sight...When I lived in California near the coast, the fog was the hardest to get used to.I hate the freezes and then everything turning brown in Texas.Sometimes it's December before that happens or New Years eve brings forth ice. Thanks for the lovely poem

MEMO: Things to do.
I will offer you my eyes
that shine like stars
above the seaward journey
of this sacred place
I will offer you my ears
that holds your music dear
and wonders of your words
and of your grace
I will offer you my mind
beyond my understanding
of how your light
will guide me to the goal
I will offer you my heart
your love ever expanding
until it holds my spirit
and my soul.
