Louvre Heist Encapsulates a Western Culture That Will Not Defend Itself
The American Spectator ^ | 24 October 2025 | Josh Hammer

Europe’s inability and unwillingness to protect its incorporeal cultural cornerstones has now extended to its tangible cultural icons.

I write from a quiet, mountainous part of Central Europe. The scenery is idyllic, and the fall air is crisp. But much as the case has been in my other recent trips to the European continent, the sights I see and the conversations I hear are all underscored by a similar haunting concern: Will there even be a Europe, in any cognizable sense of the term, a century from now?

All across the continent, fertility rates have plummeted, and the Christianity that defined the civilization for two millennia is viewed as a quaint relic of a bygone era. The combination of modern European Union political and economic integration on the one hand, combined with imposed mass immigration from foreign (namely, Islamic) cultures on the other hand, has led to a place where sense of home and hearth is diminished — and along with it, community, meaning, and purpose. (RELATED: How Islam Conquered Catholic Spain — Again)

In Britain, two Jews were killed following a synagogue attack by a Syrian immigrant on the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. In Germany — yes, Germany — Jews have already been advised for years against wearing a kippah head covering in public. More generally, Europeans’ personal happiness levels have seemingly gravitated away from church and children, the traditional sources of meaning, and toward a discomfiting positive correlation with the size of a nation’s welfare state

Hammer asks, “Will there even be a Europe, in any cognizable sense of the term, a century from now?” As Mark Steyn warned twenty years ago, “There’ll probably still be a geographical area on the map marked as Italy or the Netherlands–probably–just as in Istanbul there’s still a building called St. Sophia’s Cathedral. But it’s not a cathedral; it’s merely a designation for a piece of real estate. Likewise, Italy and the Netherlands will merely be designations for real estate. The challenge for those who reckon Western civilization is on balance better than the alternatives is to figure out a way to save at least some parts of the West.”

Atheist Europe, having abandoned God, is in the process of losing its soul.

Atheist Europe, having abandoned God, is in the process of losing its soul.

Europe as we know it is going to have to collapse before Christianity can be revitalized. Certain countries like England will fall to Islam.

Eventually, it'll look like 14th–15th centuries, when Europe was a patchwork of city-states.

The continent will have a cleansing.

If it happens soon, a lot of Muslims will die.
If it happens a little later, a lot of Europeans will die.

People who think that this will not involve rivers of blood, are just fooling themselves.

"Kings made tombs more splendid than houses of the living. and counted old names in the rolls of their descent dearer than the names of sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry; in secret chambers withered men compounded strong elixirs, or in high cold towers asked questions of the stars. And the last king of the line of Anárion had no heir." Gandalf

The symbolism is glaring. Europe has an increasingly small time window to save itself from the Marxist-Islamist alliance, where measures unimaginable to most modern Europeans will need to be taken.

Indeed. But their political leaders are either weak, feckless, or in favor of the takeover. It's up to the people.

How lost can people be to invite an army of invaders to enter their nation and conquer them?

Moreover to pay them to do it?!??

Americans have rescued Europeans many times from their stupidity. How likely are they to send their sons to die yet again on European soil to rescue Europeans from their madness?

I do not think Europe will actually be stupid enough to get into a serious war with Russia. However, if that happens, the European armies will be filled with Europeans, not Muslims. Europeans will die. Not Muslims. There is no upside for Europe in that scenario.

In case it’s not clear: give Muslims military weapons and military training, and they will slaughter their European comrades. It’s jihad. They know how to do the suicide thing. The European leaders will quickly decide to conscript Europeans and not Muslims.

It’s worse than that. The people themselves are weak, feckless, or in favor of the takeover.

People in Western Europe have no red pill. They parrot without questioning the beliefs their elites tell them to believe, and, believing themselves enlightened, consider those Americans who do question the elite to be ignorant, uncouth boobs.

That is how they see themselves and that is how they see us.

May God have mercy upon them.

Europeans’ “personal happiness” levels have gravitated
from church and children, traditional sources of meaning.

Now they contemplate about the size of a nation’s welfare state

From bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

One look at the woman’s picture makes it quite OBVIOUS that she has no interest in protecting Western Culture.
