Charlie drew a line between support for Israel and support for Netanyahu...

Distinguishing between support for Israel and support for its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, involves separating a long-standing national identity and alliance from the policies and actions of a specific, and often controversial, administration.

The state of Israel versus its government——The nation vs. the leadership: Support for Israel as a state typically involves a belief in its right to exist and defend itself. This can be distinguished from support for the actions of a particular government, which, like any government, is temporary and subject to criticism. This is a common distinction in international politics, where countries maintain relationships with other nations regardless of the ruling party.

Support for Israel’s security and prosperity does not automatically mean endorsement of Netanyahu’s specific policy decisions. For example, many supporters of Israel object to Netanyahu’s hard-line stance against a two-state solution, his expansion of settlements, or his handling of the war in Gaza.

There are internal Israeli divisions: A line is also drawn within Israel itself, where there is deep polarization regarding Netanyahu’s leadership. Recent polls have shown a majority of Israelis hold an unfavorable view of Netanyahu, with ratings varying widely across different religious and ideological groups. Protests within Israel have directly opposed Netanyahu and his policies.

Controversial governance of Netanyahu: Netanyahu’s political decisions and judicial reform efforts have been major sources of internal and external criticism. For many, supporting the Israeli people means standing for democracy, pluralism, and equality, which they feel are threatened by Netanyahu’s policies and right-wing coalition.

Some allies, including the U.S. under President Biden, have a long and unwavering commitment to Israel’s security but a more contentious relationship with Netanyahu specifically. These allies have used their influence to try to pressure Netanyahu’s government on specific issues, such as humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Public opinion on Israel has been shifting, particularly among younger generations and Democrats, but this does not uniformly correlate with views on its prime minister. In the U.S., for instance, support for Israel remains a component of foreign policy, but many question whether U.S. interests align with Netanyahu’s specific policies.

Investigations by journalists and researchers have brought to light a controversial, long-standing policy by Netanyahu to approve and facilitate the transfer of Qatari funds to Hamas. Critics argue this was part of a strategy to prevent a two-state solution by keeping the Palestinian national movement divided.

The distinction is fundamental for those who seek to support the Israeli people while critiquing the actions of their elected government, creating a more nuanced position than unconditional support for all government policies. This perspective allows for:
<><>Supporting Israel’s right to security
<><>while criticizing specific military actions or policies deemed harmful.
<><>Rejecting the rise of extremism within the governing coalition without rejecting the state itself.
<><>addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He’s not a very nice man yet reports of Netanyahu “funding” terrorism are kinda hard to believe.

He has been accused of policies that strengthened Hamas. These include allowing Qatari payments into Gaza, which some critics say indirectly aided Hamas, and backing militant Israeli groups to further his political agenda. Netanyahu has strongly denied that his policies were intended to empower Hamas.

A policy under Netanyahu’s government involved allowing Qatar to transfer funds to Hamas-controlled Gaza, a decision with several motivations and disputed consequences.

Netanyahu’s critics assert the policy intentionally strengthened Hamas to divide the Palestinian factions, thereby undermining the more moderate Fatah and obstructing a unified Palestinian state.

Some reports suggest the payments were a gamble to stabilize Gaza and avert a humanitarian crisis by keeping Hamas preoccupied with governance rather than conflict.
Indirect financial support: While Qatari funds were ostensibly for civilian salaries and aid, critics contend that by covering civilian expenses, the payments freed up Hamas’s budget for military development, including building tunnels.

In 2019, Netanyahu arranged for the merger of the far-right party Otzma Yehudit (”Jewish Power”) with other religious parties to form a united list supporting his bid for re-election. Otzma Yehudit is considered a successor to the outlawed Kach party, a group founded by a militant rabbi with links to terrorism.

Critics, including former Israeli politicians, accused Netanyahu of legitimizing extremism by incorporating a party with terrorist links into mainstream politics for his own benefit.

Allegations of Qatari payments to Netanyahu’s associates
In 2025, reports detailed an ongoing Israeli law enforcement investigation into what has been dubbed the “Qatargate” scandal. The probe focuses on whether Qatari payments were made to former Israeli security officials and associates of Netanyahu, in exchange for promoting Qatari interests.
Netanyahu’s denial: While Netanyahu himself was not directly implicated, he has called the investigation a “witch hunt”.

It is important to distinguish the allegations of indirect funding and political support from separate, more recent accusations of war crimes.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu in November 2024 for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The warrants were issued on the basis of evidence regarding actions during the Israel-Hamas conflict, not for directly funding terrorism.

President Trump said the attack was not a good idea so I’ll defer to the POTUS on this one.

Qatar has very strong diplomatic relations w/ the US. Qatar’s strong ties with the United States, Israel’s “best friend”, also underscore the complex dynamics of its relationship with Israel, as the U.S. sometimes relies on Qatar to facilitate diplomatic initiatives.

The unprovoked Israeli airstrike in Doha on September 9, 2025, prompted a meeting between Donald Trump and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

On September 9, 2025, Israel pre-emptorily launched an airstrike in Doha, Qatar, knowing full well the extent of US foreign policy in the region.

The Israelis were apparently unconcerned that the bombing incident risked undermining US-backed ceasefire efforts and escalated regional tensions, and horrifically undermined American families’ safety and security.

The Israeli attack, marshaled by Israel’s Netanyahu, caused a diplomatic crisis, with Qatar’s’Foreign Minister describing it as Israeli “state terrorism” and Qatar refuting claims that it had been pre-informed.

In response, the Qatari Prime Minister traveled to the US to meet with U.S. officials. On September 12, 2025, Donald Trump dined with the Qatari Prime Minister and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in New York.

Trump had previously expressed frustration with Israel’s unilateral action, and its never-ending bombing spree with a double impact: (a) to increase Netanyahu’s sagging popularity and (b) to undermine US foreign policy.

Trump assured Qatar that such an attack would not happen again.

The Prime Minister’s visit also included a meeting at the White House with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where they discussed the strike and future cooperation.

It upset the POTUS I know that much and probably stirred up a hornets nest that serves the political interests of Mr. Netanyahu who is on trial for corruption.

Israel getting into fights constantly on the attack keeps Bibi out of the courtroom.

The hostage families in Israel also upset at their rally last night Netanyahu called an ‘obstacle’ to a deal with Hamas to release the hostages.

They are backed by hundreds of thousands of Israelis rallying in the streets.

For now it is but President Issac Herzog wants an independent probe of October 7th.

Benjamin Netanyahu resists it.

It saddens me that young women who ended up being captured by the terrorists etc. told their commanding officers about the preparations for the attack.

They monitored the cameras along the fence.

Their commanding officers were told this that’s for sure. How it was processed higher up???
