I’m thinking of getting him a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat. It would give him controls to bump the setting up or down, but all the other controls would be too confusing for him so he wouldn’t mess with them. And, if he managed to cause trouble, I could fix things without going over.

Sadly, there are far too many young people today who have no idea what “ringing off the hook” means. At best, they know “off the hook” but have no idea where it came from.
Have you ever seen the video of the dad who told two teenaged boys to dial a number on an old dialup phone? It’s a real hoot.
Kid: Dad, there’s something wrong with the landline. It won’t let me dial Aunt Sue’s number.
Dad: You have to dial a 1 before any long distance number.
