Facing Suicide.
"The world breaks everyone and afterwards many are strong at the broken places."
So wrote Ernest Hemingway in Farewell To Arms (1929)
Hemingway lived most of his life as an outstanding outdoorsman whose understated economical literary style was male to the core.
Like his physician father before him, Hemingway died by suicide on July 2nd, 1961.
"What is the sense of ruining my head" he said of the ECT treatment in his final year that left him a wreck, "and erasing my memory, which is capital, and putting me out of business? It was a brilliant cure, but we lost the patient."
Six months later, Heminway used his favourite shotgun to end his life.
Many American conservatives hold it as an article of faith that their Second Constitutional Amendment, the right to bear arms, protects their freedom.
Does this include the autonomous right to legitimately decide when to end your own life?
Or is suicide a sin?

Thank you for your condolences.
I lost a daughter years ago...
Always questions...
Remember them to others
I am so very sorry. Prayers for Ryan and his family and friends. ((Hugs)) FRiend.
Hemingway had all three of the most important risk factors for middle age suicide...
(1) Alcohol abuse
(2) Clinical Depression
(3) Family history of suicide
He also had marital issues - blew off his head at the foot of the stairs his wife would have to descend to leave the house.
I think The Sun Also Rises is the most interesting novel I have ever read. It is the only literary novel I have read more than once.
Once sincerely given, a gift is owned by the recipient. Whether suicide is a sin is a separate question, way above my pay grade. IMHO
I’m so sorry for your loss. Praying for you and your family.
Mental illness has no rhyme or reason and can strike ppl from all walks of life. The saddest part is that the bullet that ended my son’s life also wounded everyone around him who loved him. I wish ppl could understand that before they take this drastic step. I know my son never wished to cause so much pain to others when he pulled the trigger, but he was not in his right mind in those last 10 seconds.
Didn’t one of his daughters take her life too?
Yes
My FIL had to have this treatment four times a year.
My sincere condolences.
I’m so sorry for your loss too. Does it ever get easier?
“….whose understated economical literary style…”
That ain’t what Raymond Chandler thought and it is t what I think either. I found him repetitive and overwrought. He and Joseph Conrad are the only authors I. My father’s library that I could never get into.
So sorry for such a horrible loss.

“He and Joseph Conrad are the only authors I. My father’s library that I could never get into.”
Who were your favourites in your dad’s library?
Thank you for the condolences and prayers. I didn’t mean to highjack the post. I just think suicides due to mental illness have to be regarded differently by society, especially if the person isn’t in their right mind at the time. The Catholic Church has come around on this issue and takes each case individually now.
“I think The Sun Also Rises is the most interesting novel I have ever read. It is the only literary novel I have read more than once.”
I will go to my favourite bookstore soon to see if they have it.
“If you didn’t create your life, how does it make any sense to think you have the right to destroy it?”
Is your own life your own?
“Pure praire and the elements, confronted without end.”
praire (prairie without the I) is either a typo or poetic brilliance
