Among the worst disasters for progressivism in recent decades has been the work of Aaron Sorkin, whose impossibly articulate ratatat dialogue made it way too easy to imagine sexy technocrats saving the world. It’s great entertainment, but normalized unreasonable expectations of the flawed human beings who happen to have high IQs and impeccable credentials.
As a child of the New Left, I never missed The West Wing: it was irresistible catnip for my adolescent hopes and dreams, and so much more satisfying than whatever was on the news—except for the eloquent public intellectuals on the Bill Moyers show on PBS. Later, as an idealistic policy major at Brown, I was surprised and disappointed to find basically nobody operating on that level.
It was only when I’d lucked into joining the Moyers organization that I began to understand how such Sorkinesque eloquence was manufactured each week—not with deliberate dishonesty, but ever more misleading as years passed and the scene grew shallower.
We’d typically tape on Thursday or Friday mornings to turn around by Friday nights. Being of Bill Moyers’ approximate height, I was tasked with showing up early to fill his chair as gruff union guys set up cameras and lighting. Then, as Bill’s blogger and research assistant, I’d watch live interviews from the control room to highlight quotable moments.
Uncut conversations were eye-opening; it was astonishing how often our esteemed guests hemmed and hawed and got basic facts embarrassingly wrong. And how many came off batshit crazy: one, later an anchor on MSNBC, speculated that Captain Sully’s Miracle on the Hudson—visible from our west side offices—had been God blessing the Obamas.

The same people who fall for Aaron Sorkin fall for ‘professional juries’ and ‘intelligence’ thugs running government better than elected officials.
I stopped watching television years before the West Wing came online, but from what I heard and saw of it, it was a form of Leftist masturbation.
It is putting into a fantasy television show what they themselves try to do every single day to the American public through a compliant and willing Media.
I detest Alan Sorkin and what he stands for. The only thing, and I mean the only thing I saw that he had any hand in was “A Few Good Men”, and even then, it was pretty clear what he was doing there.
Sorkin is a putrid brown stain on the underwear of this Republic.
Not sure how many of “The West Wing” I watched - maybe less than two. I watched the one after September 11th. It was horrible.
The one entire WW episode I watched that infuriated me.

Too bad I can’t get the 5 minutes of my life back I spent reading that piece.
My parents would watch “The Left Wing” as I call it. They worked in Hollywood and it was virtually mandatory to watch the propaganda piece.
My parents succumbed to their frailties and in the course of doing so revealed to me the empty, arrogant, and patronizing lies of the left.
Aaron Sorkin is no hero to me. He is one of the treasonous voices that Cicero spoke of.
Even though I never watched a single show, I could see it for exactly what it was.
Was as if you gave an adolescent the opportunity to describe to the world and portray themselves as how they wanted the world to see them.
It was as simple as that. I found it in its concept to be absurd and patently pathetic.
It's easy to create a world of personal nirvana, but that world doesn't serve everyone in the same manner. Just another Ivy League whiner who envisions the perfect world, for himself.
“The West Wing” was a fig leaf for the Clinton administration.
Who you gonna believe… fictional television or your lyin’ eyes?
They HAD to invent the West Wing to rehabilitate Clinton. And Madam Secretary to inoculate Hillary.
It’s hilarious if you juxtapose those shows against reality…
I read the article, and I thought they were a few points for a note. For example, it is easy to see them having their little “inside the bubble” conversations, while they thought things through.
That is 100% absolutely not something they would ever want the “outside world“ to ever see.
I thought the comment about reassembling their hours of vacuously stupid “in the bubble“ conversations about things by taking the pieces, however, short, and reassembling them into something that could be put on the television,
One of the things I have found out over the years is that if you can convince people that you’re “one of them”, you can find out what they’re all about.
That is precisely what James O’Keefe and Project Veritas leveraged to show the truth of what the left is all about.
One wades through word after word of this lefty, self absorbed lament of the aching chasm for progressives between the world of Aaron Sorkin and the world of Bill Moyers.
A world of sexy, edgy manipulation vs. a world of vapid academic masturbation.
Yup, the “Worst Wing” should have been the title, since the left has consistently shown that they are incapable of rational thought. They are the enemy. Pure evil. Exterminate! Exterminate!
You didn’t know already these so called “intellectuals” were vapid propagandists? One look at their supposed “intellectual” ramblings on how the world should be organised tells me all I need to know about their “intellect”.
Sorkin’s scripts sound like an alien trying to sound human based on old 1940s movies but not understanding how people actually interact.
That is a demeaning way to carry on discourse with someone.
Why would you say that as if I were one of these people who wander around with their heads up their posteriors?
I was making the point that this is one of those people inside the bubble making these observations, which is a valid and not a stale observation.
“if you can convince people that you’re “one of them”, you can find out what they’re all about.”
Yup—that is a great life hack—used it all the time—never failed me.
I remember before the 2016 election I would quietly listen to various lefties crowing about the coming Hillary landslide.
I knew they were about to get the shock of a lifetime but I was not going to be the one to spoil the surprise!
The youtube clip of the West West, wherre the president flailed a disrespectful religious woman, was all i needed to see.
that was the epitomy of leftist script writing.
as to mssr. sorkin, i call, and raise you my 126 i.q., and the hole card, mssr. william f. buckley, whom i watched and learned a few things, before i went to southeast asia for 3 years.
The precursors to the woke morons - the hippies - correctly identified the woke crowd as plastic people.
