Gun registry at Cabela's
9/25/2022 | antidemoncrat

I went to my nearest Cabela's this week to do a little shopping. When I entered the store I noticed a sign at the service counter that essentially said guns entering the store must be registered at the counter. I asked if that was all guns and was told yes. I took out my conceal carry and put it on the country. Thee attendant asked me if the gun had bullets in it (DUH!). I said yes. He then told me I had to take the gun to the gun sales and have them unload it and then bring it back up to register it. I then told him I would just take it back out to my car and leave it. Probably last shopping trip to Cabela's.

Carry policy cut and paste direct from the Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s website:

Concealed/Open Carry Policies:

If you have a valid concealed carry permit within the state where the store is located, we honor your right to carry if it is completely concealed.

Open carry of a handgun is allowed as long as the firearm remains holstered, except where prohibited by state or local law.

All local, state, and federal law enforcement officials and authorized persons are permitted to carry weapons openly in the store.

Seems like your local Cabela’s has it’s own policies that conflict with corporate policy.

If confronted (somehow, since carrying concealed) with ‘registering’, I would have taken my gun AND myself out to the car & not gone back in.

Right you are. I don't need Cabela's but Cabela's needs me.

Yes, some years ago, a co-worker of mine had a very unfortunate experience. He patronized a shooting range which had lockers on site for storage of weapons. Well, one day he goes to the range and there’s a small crowd of people at the door. The range had closed, with their weapons inside. They called the police, who wound up getting into the store. On investigation, they found a number of the weapons stored in lockers at the range had been used in crimes across a number of states. The owners of the range were “renting” guns out to criminals. So all the guns were impounded for evidence. When the investigation was over, the city began destroying the weapons. They cited a state law claiming that it called for the destruction of any guns involved in a felony. They conveniently left out the complete wording of the law: “Any gun used in a felony with the consent of the owner.” Some of those guns had already been destroyed before the lawyers got them to stop.

After I retired from my grown-up career a worked for five years at the gun counter at Cabelas as a NICS examiner.this was before the merger with BassPro.

If you came into the store with a gun to sell, ship or repair, you had to have a gun counter person meet you at the door, make sure it was unloaded and walk it up to the gun counter. If you entered the store with holstered gun, no one cared so long as it stayed holstered. I don’t know what changed.

Looks like they have the same policy.

(The owners of the range were “renting” guns out to criminals.)

I hope those doing so went to prison for a very long time.

I will not voluntarily disclose that I am carrying. I will ignore the sign when and if I see it here in Nevada, just like I do all of these store signs. If they discover I am carrying, I'll leave if asked. No big deal, I'll shop elsewhere.

Now, if the store had visible armed security, that might be a different matter. But I will not participate in a gun-free zone that is not supported with on-site armed security.

The local Cabelas (Bass Pro) is “very proud” of the product they sell. Things that I want are usually pegged near or at MSRP at Cabelas. I’ll visit their store, just across the line in SC, but rarely, rarely buy anything. Try things on, hold a product in my hand, even rolled out a sleeping bag and lay down on it once...and then order the item thru a different, much cheaper vendor online...usually from the Cabelas parking lot.

They shouldn’t of pissed me off with their “Please declare all guns” kiosk at the front of the store. Screw’em.

I noticed a sign at the service counter that essentially said

I see you used the word "essentially". Would you please post the actual sign so informed Freepers can make their own decisions with real facts and not based on your opinion of what a sign "essentially" says?

My local Cabela's has a sign as well, but it is clearly only related to bringing guns in for servicing. I have never had even a hint that they were keeping a 'registry' for any purpose other than to make sure those guns are safely handled.

This is a misleading post bashing what I have found to be a very openly 2nd amendment-friendly business. You should at least amend the title if not pull it altogether unless you can provide a picture of a sign that actually fits your (mis)interpretation.

Love,
O2

Unless you are walking around looking for a reason to be outraged. It happens a lot these days. Then they post their outrage for the world to see.

The disgusting swamp rats are working with big tech to do what they can’t “legally due” and cancelling the 1st amendment. There is no reason they won’t do it as the evil Barry Soetero did and that is “under the radar” encouraging businesses to do their bidding against the 2nd amendment. It’s only a matter of time before they figure out how to end the 3rd amendment since the rest of them are just about non-existent.

Or maybe we are not getting the whole story.

The owners of the range were “renting” guns out to criminals.

Sorry, but I'm not buying that story.

You're going to "rent" a gun to go commit a crime then you're going to return it to the place of rental afterwards? I don't think so.......

RETAIL FIREARMS POLICIES

General Firearms Policy

Customers may bring their firearm into a Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s Retail Store for many reasons (i.e. gun appraisal, mounting a scope, bore sighting or fitting the firearm for a specific accessory such as holsters, straps, magazines, scopes, etc.). Customers entering the store with a firearm will have the firearm thoroughly inspected by one of our Outfitters at the entrance of the store for the safety of our customers and outfitters.

NOTE: This policy does not apply to licensed concealed carry firearms or to holstered firearms where open carry is permitted.
