Hello from the third National Conservatism conference, meeting in Miami. Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed the conference on the first night, and blew everyone away. It helped that he followed a dull but half-hysterical rant by Sen. Rick Scott, who fired a barrage of Republican cliches at the audience (watch it here). A conservative writer friend sitting across the room texted me during the speech to joke that this thing was so bad it's causing him to rethink all his convictions.

Funny. I read the tea leaves exactly opposite. Trump will not be held hostage by the thought of another election but the RINO will be. And the left will have had a drubbing and their ideas proven venial, self serving & rejected. They will still try & circle the wagons but rats will be fleeing the ship.
And China has her own problems and diminishing options with a real leader at America’s helm...
A bad performance in office can open the way for a newcomer and a change in party, but long term winning politics requires building your coalition by keeping its constituents satisfied and adding new voting blocs where possible. Adroit issue management is part of that, which nowadays usually involves a combination of detailed polling and keen political tactics. And generational change and events constantly alter the size and energy of voting blocs and the issues that matter to them.
For example, the reversal of Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs case touched off a lot of angst among suburban women, who are frequent swing voters. For the GOP, going on the attack over the sudden prominence of CRT and gender ideology has a potent pull in their direction as to suburban women that counteracts the Dems trying to use Dobbs to attract them.
CRT is essentially anti-white racial agitation, while gender ideology menaces the development and fundamental identity of children. The net result may be that even as registered independent divorced suburban mom Sally usually votes GOP due to money issues but now feels pro-choice for fear of her teen daughter having an unwanted pregnancy, she is even more strongly GOP this year because she worries about her kids getting harassed or hurt at school because they are white or even going trans or homo due to sexual grooming at school.
What kind of parent looks for an abortion to solve a pregnancy? Might as well destroy a daughter as a moral human being, give her guilt for life and turn her towards a life of selfishness and shallow relationships.
